It was spectacular 40 years ago. I was 10, and the first movie blew my mind. Does it hold up? Not really. You can see now that, technically, it’s not very good. The acting is average (with the exception of Alec Guiness), the direction is okay, the editing leaves something to be desired. You can’t put that lightning back inside the bottle. No SW movie will ever be as awesome as it was in 1977. That said, I think Rogue One came pretty close. That blew TFA out of the water.

I’m psyched to see Luke in action. But I’m worried how they will handle the story and how Leia’s part will be done. The ongoing Disney-fication is worrisome. Won’t stop me from going and enjoying it.

The Austin Symphony is providing the music for a screening of Ep IV this week. The principal trumpet player for the show, who is about 10 years younger than me, has never seen any of them. We did Harry Potter a couple of weeks ago and he hadn’t seen any of them, either. So I loaned him both, but he wasn’t impressed.

We’ve all played various bits of that music ever since 1977, suites, collections, etc. So any orchestral musician will be more than familiar with Williams’ film scores. He said he just wasn’t into sci-fi or fantasy, so he never saw the movies.

Look at the way he looms over the poster in the same position Darth Vader did in the very first one. Don’t think that’s by accident. I’d like to think this is the conclusion of his story, that it’s about him, not Rey.

I was just having a drunken convo with my buddy (he’s Star Wars OBSESSED) and I had this thought:
I think the new series hinges on this scene:
Where Luke leaves Yoda and Dagobah...Luke has just had a vision of the future and is compelled to dip. Yoda says this “if you leave now, help them you could...but you will destroy all for which they have fought”
It’s one of the most complicated lines in the whole story. And I think it’s true. Luke does leave. He does help them. And yet...
Han and Leia do not have a happily ever after. The Rebellion does defeat the Empire. But do they “win”?
And as he takes off...Obi Wan says “that boy was our last hope” to which Yoda replies “no, there is another”
And for all of my life I’ve thought they must be talking about Leia.
But now....is it Rey? Poe? Kylo?
What in the real fuck are they truly HOPING FOR?!?!??

Deep. But I think Yoda was just assuming it likely that Luke would lose or be turned. His track record of predictions, for a Jedi Master, is startlingly bad. That doesn’t mean Disney won’t take that line and run with it. Remember, the guys writing now don’t talk to the guys who wrote then.
Here’s another bit to chew on: in TESB, after Luke unloads his ship, he remarks to R2, “...there’s something familiar about this place.” Then, Yoda interrupts his thought. What about Degobah could possibly be familiar to a kid from a desert planet? Maybe it’s just a throw away line, but work on it next time you’re drunk. See what you can come up with.
