Taking advantage of the early morning sun to get some planespotting done down at KAUS. I like it when the sun is low enough to illuminate the pilots. Lots of pictures on the way, plus some Miss Mercedes bait.

Nice! The real baller aircraft above is the G-V.

Thanks. The Falcons are my favorite, particularly the 50.

They always land on 17R, and I’m on 17L.

That was my favorite. It was built in 1984, the year I graduated from HS.

The Falcons are nice, too - back when I was flying, the G-V was the biggest aircraft that flew in and out of KPWK, where I was based.

And it was a LOT bigger than anything else there (besides the G-III and G-IV) - to the point where pilots of those had to taxi pretty carefully, lest they bang a wingtip on something. They stuck out from the crowd there.

The Citation you labeled as “Cessna Citation” is a Latitude, N523QS. And if you weren’t aware, “NXXXQS” are all Netjets planes, like the Falcoln in the last picture. Also the Delta Airbus that followed the Latitude looks to be an A321, not an A319 as labeled.

I have to say I really like the current American livery. It was a shame to see the polished aluminum go, but I think they replaced it with a nice clean look. Southwest’s current design is lovely, and I think Delta and United are long overdue for an update.

What’s the surprise? That the flight is airborne?

I like the new AA livery, but that would be effing awesome if it was on the polished aluminum background instead of grey paint.

AA used to brag about how much more environmentally friendly the unpainted aircraft were - besides not using VOCs, IIRC the aircraft weighed less and used less fuel (in reality had more useful load but whatever).

Thanks for the corrections. I thought I had taken thorough notes this time, but my kids were being idiots in the background (they’re off school today) and I may have gotten crossed up.

I much preferred the old American livery. I think it photographed much better. I must say, though, that it has grown on me. United is a total snooze.

You are also correct about the A321.

737-600's can burn in fire. Hate them so much.

To wit, about the old AA livery. The colors really popped off of that silver.

Flew on one from MCO - YYZ. Flying from YYZ - MCO it was 737-800. The 737-800 could fit in comfortably, the 737-600 I could not get comfortable.

AA flies a handful of 787s and I believe they have A350s on order (though they’ve deferred them a few times), the unpainted look wasn’t going to work on those aircraft so they needed to do something.

The slight modernization on United’s 787s helps, but it’s still bland.

True, but look at the above photos that ttyymmnn posted - there are some non-aluminum parts on those, too. Notably the vertical stab, and I think it looks good — with the exception of the baggage doors and nose cone, I’ll admit that looks terrible.

Did someone mention an AA 787? I photographed this one almost two years at DFW. It was completing a shake down flight of some sort.

You’d end up with a handful of planes in the new livery or the old livery with grey instead of silver, which would be at best inconsistent and at worse really ugly as I don’t think the old livery works without the silver.

I would actually keep the new livery across the board - just leave the base unpainted on the aluminum bodied aircraft.

Their old livery just looks dated these days, as good as it was.

More and more in recent years, and mostly from you guys. You have a 757 that I see regularly and that my wife has flown on. AUS is adding 9 gates, and I heard that BA is going to start 747 service here in the Spring. I imagine that will supersede the daily 787 trip. I can’t believe there are that many people who want to go the Heathrow from Austin. We’ve also got a regular Condor flight to Frankfurt (I think).

Late to the party, but lovely bait taken!

Maybe I’ll live in a retired freighter MD-11 one day. ;)
