I showed this to a lot of people across social media and the like. I am genuinely afraid that one of my friends would try to get into motorcycles and buy one of the 30$ helmets. That visor test was terrifying. A stray pebble at highway speeds could cause that visor to shatter into daggers right in front of your eyes. And the overall strength of the helmet is so hilariously poor I am amazed that it is legal for sale.

Of all the places to save some cash, helmet is probably last on my list.

Breaking: Helmet that costs 10x more is higher quality and safer than bottom-barrel eBay helmet.

I would like to see them compare the eBay helmet to, say, a much more budget friendly helmet around the $100 mark. Maybe something like this Bilt helmet from Cyclegear.

I would like to see this tested as well.

The Chinese helmet seems like it would be a poor bicycle helmet.

I know he tested a wide variety of helmets including the biktwell gringo....it wasn’t that good. I wish he’d do more since nowadays it’s almost exclusively bike reviews. But I think he’s getting back into them.

Seems like the Chinese one could be good for costuming except for glue fumes and no ventilation. Maybe you could make a lamp out of it?

Not motorcycles but this is why I will quite happily spend $600 on my next auto racing helmet. I like my brains where they are and am happy to buy nice brain protection devices.

As shown on the back of the helmet, it’s not DOT approved so while it is legal to sell the helmet, it doesn’t meet the minimum requirements to wear on the road. It’s useless. All helmets must have the DOT sticker to be legal, and preferably the SNELL and ECE sticker too.

The $30 helmet wasn’t even DOT approved. A $100 helmet with DOT (and hopefully SNELL and ECE) approval will always fare much better. Once you get over a certain price point, you’re just paying for lightness, comfort or a cool paint job.

That’s what I mean - they advertise it as DOT legal when it clearly isn’t, so that part is wrong, but it is so unable to do the job it advertises for that it’s amazing the consumer protection groups haven’t ramrodded that thing back across the pacific. Doubly so when HJC makes definitely DOT legal helmets, full faced, with visors, that have been safety and quality tested, and that are on store shelves for well under 100$.
