Driving through texas. *shudders* I once drove from kansas city to austin and my goodness that drive nearly broke me. If anyone is unsure about driverless cars, have them drive the length of I-35 and they’ll be begging for one.

I’ve only been through Texas twice in my life, but West Texas was my favorite part. I remember driving West from San Antonio on, I think it was US 290 or US 90 (I-10 wasn’t complete in 1976). The first time I did it was at night. Two lanes, no street lights, no traffic whatsoever, stretches of miles and miles where aside from the road there was absolutely no visible evidence of the existence of the human race. Amazing, breathtaking. Afterwards I used to call it “The Great Texas Nothing.”
Then in the middle of all that nothing, I came to a little gas-stop town with a used-book store, where I bought a paperback copy of David Bunch’s

I drove across Texas on I-10 during our cross-country run last year. To give a bit of perspective, we drove from Jacksonville, Florida to San Diego, California... and Texas accounted for 1/3rd of the miles we traveled.
On the plus side, western Texas + night = best average speed of the entire trip.
