How's the cost of maintenance on one of these?

IIRC, this is one of the most unreliable cars produced in the past 20 years. It’s like an M3 with none of the driving fun, an okay engine, a little more comfort, and double the amount of things to go wrong.

Lots. Look on sweedspeed. The “normal maintenance” costs are astounding. That said... They look so good. Awesome engine. Unique manual. Fantastic interior. There’s a lot to love

According to Rotors when I talked to her about one, don’t do it.

I hear nothing but horror stories... But it’s just so handsome, and those seats look phenomenal! I’m dumb, so I’d totally buy one.

I just bought an old S60, but I couldn’t bring myself to even look at the S60R. Seemed like asking for trouble given all the extra complexity on that car and the stress it is under.

Angle gear and suspension (4c) tends to be the biggie. As is usually the case, the reputation of poor reliability isn’t necessarily deserved. An Unmodified example isn’t a bad car. When people start flashing them and putting on bigger turbos, boom.

The real issue with the perceived reliability woes? People expecting an older European car to be inexpensive to maintain, especially those people that are unable to maintain it themselves.

I’d buy one if it was in good shape. They drive rad.

Rs are only more costly in the area of suspension and brakes. They’re not that much different from any other P2 Volvo. AWD Volvos can get expensive when normal maintenance is ignored. Haldex pumps, angle gears, and 4C struts are only expensive in the context of how cheap the current car entry price is. No one would bat an eye when the car was valued at 45k in 2004 money.

Might as well just buy a Mazda RX-8 at this point.

No less reliable than a contemporary German car, but the problem is people expected Volvo bulletproofness, and that’s not gonna happen with so many untried and new technologies all on one car from the Skyhook 4C to the performance AWD.

Except it’s not. Volvo people are delirious. Source: Grew up around Volvos

Lol, the Rotary is waaaaaaaaaay cheaper to feed. Hell, I would even venture to say a rebuild is cheaper than some of the suspension parts on the Volvo.

Apparently people like to say they’re shit but my good friend actually has a V70R and its been pretty problem free. He is afraid of the suspension breaking so he just leaves it in normal, but it hasn’t broken. His biggest complaints about the car it no aux/tape deck or easy replacement stereo and he currently has warped rotors.

Kinja'd!!!

Volvos have the best seats and its great on road trips, not as good as you’d think on gas. Manual + subtle turbo 5 noises + AWD = greatness.

1. It’s not a M3 competitor. That’s on Volvo for saying it was 13 years ago but most people that have driven them realize that it’s not. The sedans and wagon Rs are sport touring cars if anything. They are wonderful at that. They are not track cars.

2. It seems like your anecdotal evidence for the bad stuff is tainting your thoughts. I don’t know of anyone that actually dislikes a turbo 5-cylinder. It makes torque, it makes horsepower, it’s smooth as silk, it sounds funky, etc.

3. A little more comfort compared to what? The M3 again? I’d say a lot more. One is a sports car pretending to be a daily and the other is a daily pretending to be a sports car. Volvo seats and R seats in particular are regarded as some of the best seats of any car. The R seats are essentially La-Z-Boy Recaros.

4. I’ll give you double the amount of things to go wrong. That’s 100% true for any car when one is RWD and the other is AWD. How much does a VANOS repair cost again?

5. I love M3s, btw. The E46 in particular. They just don’t belong in this conversation.

Im a few days late to this post, and the CL ad is gone. But, I just bought one of these. Got an 07 with 87K miles, a couple of mods, and a handful of replacement parts recently installed.
