Kinja'd!!!

In the quest to achieve peak MR2, I’ve been looking for the right wheels. Something concave that fits nicely. Turns out Jeep wheels meet those criteria! ( Thanks mkbruin, Atlas VP for pointing that out ). What’s Oppo think of this idea?

There are tons of OE and aftermarket Jeep wheels out there, and many of them fit on my non-Jeepish MR2 as well. I need to narrow down the options, and find a wheel-and-tire package that fits on the car.

The SW20-generation MR2 has one key limitation in wheel fitment, and that’s the front suspension clearance. The springs are massive and sit above the wheel with about a centimeter of clearance. Switching to a coilover setup would simplify wheel choice considerably, but also would add additional expense to the project.

One option (photoshopped above) is the KMC Rockstar wheel. Their smallest size (17x8 at a +10 offset) fits perfectly at the back of my car. Clearance is fine at the front of the car too, but would result in a positive scrub radius of 30mm. I’d rather avoid such a massibe scrub radius, so coilovers and a different offset might be the way to go if I choose Rockstars.

Kinja'd!!!

Is this a ridiculous idea or just a weird idea? Coilovers or nah? There’s an overwhelming number of choices so post your favorites...

My opinion, they’re kinda ridiculous. I’m pretty sure those wheels are heavy as hell. Also, how concave are you looking for?

I see those wheels on Jeeps all the time and I’m always shocked by how ugly they are. Plus they’re probably crazy heavy.

Don’t do it.

I work at a used car dealership and the boss keeps buying brodozers at the auction with these wheels. They weigh 2-3x as much as a steelie in that size, and they require low-profile lugnuts . The worst part about them is that the center caps use 3 ridiculously long stainless steel hex head cap screws (the rest are fake) that thread into aluminum. I’ve been able to get all the screws out of a set of those once. Every other set that’s come through at least two are seized and snap off.

So you put those on your MR2 and 6 months later you get a flat. Okay, where’s the Allen key to unscrew the center caps? Where did the special low-profile socket go?

As much as I hate Rockstars I would love to see bro trucks wheels reapplied somewhere else.

I’m no Auto X guru but I bet some lighter wheels designed for a sports car would feel way nicer. Truck wheels will increase unsprung weight by a lot I bet.

Lightest wheels you can afford, unless your primary goal is style (which I’m not hating on, you do you!)

Wheels two or three pounds lighter than stock will make a noticeable difference, more weight you drop, the more noticeable that difference will be. I would imagine those wheels above are VERY heavy.... That’s going to be a huge hit to the car in terms turn-in, steering feel, and just good handling in general. Sounds like the exact opposite of peak MR2..?

I don’t know what the budget is like, but if you can find a place that ships for free, buying pricier wheels one at a time is a nice way to spread the cost out and not take such a large hit to your wallet!

That’s an entirely reasonable take. Any specific brands you’d recommend for achieving lightness? Something 15" or 16" and preferably 6 spokes I guess.

Gah, that sounds like a nightmare. Thank you for pointing that out, much rather not deal with headaches like that.

I need to stop believing the Rockstar wheels website when they say “Lightweight aluminum construction” but don’t post the weight of the wheel itself... Hahaha thank you for the good point.

I guess concavity doesn’t matter as much as just having the right diameter and width. But as I’m being told in the other comments too, lighter weight and a good fit on the car will improve handling more than a wider wheel will. Rockstar’s website advertises them as “lightweight” but doesn’t post a weight. Go figure.

Mmmm yup. You summed up the rest of Oppo’s sentiment on it too. Thank you for the honesty, I’ll go find some TE37s or RPF1s.

I guess, based on the rest of the comments, these would just be too heavy for my lil’ MR2. Plenty of other options though...

I mean, Motegi Traklites would be pretty nice. But I don’t know if they ever made a 6 spoke variety.

They weigh only 13.7 lbs each for the 16x7 size that fits on my car. That’s probably the realistic best option.

For comparisons sake, what are the specs of the current wheels? Weight, bolt-pattern etc. I don’t know much about MR2's (unfortunately)

Rockstars would definitely make it seem like you might not even know the engine is in the back to most car guys. Very strong no. Please erase KMC wheels from your memory now.

Peak MR2 would be a TRD2000GT body on BBS LM to me.

Please at least try to find some JDM market wheels for this or not say “peak mr2". R32/R33 GTR or nothing. Just freaking find some, thank me later.

How heavy are those? Increasing unsprung AND rotational weight will be detrimental to everything about the car.

5x114.3, 14x6, aluminum wheels. 20 lbs per wheel which is a lot for 14s.

Heard lots of good things about RPF1s since they weigh 13 lbs for the 16x7.

I’m probably just gonna get RPF1s and call it a day. The Rockstars seem like a pretty ridiculous choice according to the rest of Oppo.
