The prior owner did not just break bolts overtightening the valve cover. I found this as I was removing the silicone.

I wonder if I can find a 5V-EU. Would that pass CA smog?

[UPDATE: When my wife saw this discovery, shw shrugged and said “That happens. It is a project.” When I mentioned we could consider abandoning it for a project wothout such a problem, she was indignant that THIS ONE IS HER CAR, and goddamn it, we WILL save its life. For her, there is no other project.

Nissan L28 swap time. Probably could even do it with a 5 speed. I’m guessing a new cylinder head is not an off the shelf item.

You could probably put it back together and use the valve cover bolt to locate the rest of the bearing and it would probably run on the street forever. The cam is still supported by the other bearings and the broken one too. Esentially the purpose of the broken part is to not let too much oil leak. Rather than pulling the head. that is what I would do......
