It is simply car enthusiast nature to constantly look ahead towards our next car purchase. Whether it’s plans to pick up a project car within the next month or thoughts about a replacement for our daily driver in five years, the next car is always on our minds. Sometimes it’s like a song lyric you just can’t forget, never changing but always nagging. Other times it’s like plans for dinner being made at 2 PM, ever changing with sights and smells altering our image of an ideal meal.

To entertain myself today, I’d like to see what oppo’s plans for their next car are. This isn’t meant to be a dream car unless you plan to acquire a dream car next. This is simply the next logical, attainable step on your neverending car ownership journey.

For me, it’s a GT350

Kinja'd!!!

I guess I’m officially a Mustang fanboy now. It’s a bit crazy to think just 4 years ago I was making fun of Mustangs and beating the drum of a Ford hater. I had a Chevy Sonic and swore I’d never own a Mustang. Now I’m on my second Mustang, and in my mind my next purchase in a few years will be a 3rd.

The S550 platform is just that good. I love the way these cars look, the interiors are a nearly perfect balance of quality and design for the price tag, and the GT350 adds that simply unbeatable 5.2 liter Voodoo engine. I had heard a few in person and been wowed, but once I’d had a chance to drive a GT350R for 56 seconds? Game over. I’m sorry, but there simply isn’t a better engine on the market today. Full. Stop. The sounds it makes are as unnatural as they are viscerally orgasmic. The power is just about perfect: not so much you feel intimidated but enough to make your eyes wide and watering as it screams towards the unheard of 8500 RPM redline.

There are better cars, but not for the money. With used models dipping under $50,000 already, I’m eyeing the market and crossing my fingers for them to hit the low $40s where I believe I can reasonably stretch a budget to bring one home. Or if I can find my way to just a little more income I can take one sooner.

The GT350 is my next car, what’s yours?

I’m waiting for the Camaro SS 1LE I ordered to be delivered.

Compared to the Mustang GT Performance Pack I drove, the Camaro was just a wee bit better to drive, outward visibility be damned.

You have to give both the Mustang and Camaro teams credit: they have both built cars that have transcended the pony car class.

Practical me says a Porsche Macan S.

Financially conservative me says one of the MGB GT, Austin 1300 Countryman, or VW Squareback I’ve found on Craigslist.

The impractical and financially irresponsible version of me says an air-cooled Porsche or Lotus Esprit.

Will probably end up being the Macan + one of the cheap old Euros.

I’ve got a couple choices.

Current want is a Bronco, like my Dad’s (you may recall I was looking for his before I found out it was scrapped). 1984, 351W, C6 auto, XLT, optioned out just like his.

Kinja'd!!!

Second choice- 1973-77 Ford 4x4 pickup. V8, auto, etc.

Kinja'd!!!

Third choice- 1981-90 (preferably ‘86 or ‘87 for crosshair grille and carbureted) Dodge Power Ram. Much like the 70s Ford, V8, and auto (Power Rams are all 4x4. 2WDs were just “Ram”)

Was the Camaro you drove a 1LE?

I haven’t driven the current gen SS. I drove a V6 and felt it was on par with my EB at the time. Both are fantastic cars, I personally prefer the styling of the Mustang inside and out. For autocross, which is the only measuring stick of performance relevant to my needs, the regular SS and GTPP are comparable. This year at Solo Nationals a GTPP placed higher than any 6th Gen SS’s. The 1LE is certainly a better performance car, but it is placed in a different class as a result.

I drove a 2SS with the 1LE suspension (which includes the magnetic ride control), Recaros, and standalone brake upgrade (At the time, this was as close to the 1LE that any of the dealers would let me drive without waiting for an ordered car to come in) before ordering the 1SS 1LE. The only pieces that the 1LE gives you which weren’t on the car were the eLSD, the ZL1 wheels and tires, and the rear ATS-V brakes. The 1LE should be a bit lighter than the 2SS kitted out that way.

If I didn’t track the car on road courses, or do any motorsports at all, I would have bought a Mustang GT Premium and never questioned it. The 1LE is enough of a punch though that Ford is reportedly doing a Performance Pack 2, to bridge the gap between the GT Performance Pack and the Camaro 1LE.

For GT350 or (especially) GT350R money, I’m buying a Corvette Grand Sport.

I have yet to do track work, though I plan to next year.

The C7GS starts a bit more than a GT350. A GT350 with the “tech package” to get a comparable cabin is only $61k, while a C7GS starts at $65k. The 3 cars I’d consider in that $60k class would be the GT350, C7GS, and Cayman S. I just think the Voodoo engine is so special that it takes the cake in that comparison.

If/when I eventually get a GT350, I intend to build it out as more of a road course car than an autox car. Which really just means shedding some weight as I don’t think it needs much else. The R actually doesn’t make that much sense to me. It’s not really all that different from the GT350 in any meaningful way. It’s a bit lighter and that’s actually what stood out to me the most besides the motor when I drove an R, the lightness. But if you take a GT350, remove the back seats, and get some lighter wheels you’re most of the way there.

As a next (project) car I’ve been thinking about getting a DAF 55 Coupe for a long time. I’m just waiting till I have enough space to work on it (probably after I move out).

Kinja'd!!!

The plan (depending on which spec I can find, if I find a top spec Marathon, it’ll be restored to stock) is to fit a twin double weber/individual carbed 1400cc engine instead of the 1100/1300cc one it comes with (both are Renault Cleon-Fonte engines, so should be a relative straight forward swap), replace the rear swing arm suspension by a DeDion setup from a newer model, and making the whole car look a bit tougher more rally-ish(lights, arches, cage etc). A possible extension of the plan is to fool around with the Variomatic CVT in order to make it possible to change the vacuum thresholds on the go.

On the daily driver side of things, I’m thinking of replacing the Twingo with a Megane 3 RS in a few years time.

Toy depends on what comes up at the price I’m willing to pay at the time. I mainly find myself looking at American cars from around 1954-62 or something along the lines of a Fiat Spyder, MG or Triumph.

It has changed due to purchasing a house and a job change that happens after the mortgage paperwork is signed (closing in 2 weeks). Originally, I thought we’d be getting a mid-sized SUV. Now it looks like an electric car, if someone will get their head out of their ass and make a decent one that isn’t unfathomably expensive like a Tesla, impractical like most (sub-100-mile ranges...give me 200+ and I’m interested), or uncomfortable/cheap inside (like a Bolt or Leaf).

So, we plan to get something electric that is comfortable for commuting and mid-distance drives (up to 150-ish miles).

Probably a mid-size pickup in short bed, crew-cab configuration. It’d replace my Outback for general people+stuff hauling duties, winter driving, and would add the ability to haul the Exocet. That last point, in turn, vastly expands my range of viable travel, weather and tire options for events. Probably won’t be for another year or two though.
