Low cost companies from the British isles, like Ryanair and Easyjet seem to be dominant in the market segment, but airlines from the East seem to gain some ground, I’ve began to recognize tails like Wizz or Blue Air, that’s how often I see them on Spanish airports.

Got stranded for over 24 hours with flybe recently. The delay wasnt their fault but their customer service dealing with it was freaking awful.

I’d like to avoid budget airlines but it’s so much more expensive...

I have flown 7 times with Ryanair and 6 out of the 7 times, it was pleasant experience. I consider myself extremely lucky, because I know on average a lot of the flights have problems. If you are lucky like me, your flights to be on their newer planes it is very decent experience if your not around 190 cm and above. On the other hand Wizzair flights are horrible experience every single time.

Had to Google that airline. Hey, can’t expect a regional airline to be a champion of customer care.

I only took European low cost flights twice, as I prefer regular airlines and the excellent railway system I found here, Blue Air from Málaga to Milan and Eurowings the way back. It was pretty good, clean planes, nice flight attendants, and decent food(even if it wasn’t free).

It’s helped force the legacy carriers to lower their prices as well. BA often works out fairly economical as Heathrow is fairly easy to get to from the West. If Stansted wasn’t such an arse to get to I’d probably use it a lot more.

Can’t really argue with European trips for under £30 from Ryanair.

Interesting video, although I’d quibble with the order he put things in.

Running an airline cheaply comes down to a couple of things - keeping airplanes in the air as much as you possibly can; reducing fixed costs at airports; and reducing labor costs.

I would argue that Southwest was the original innovator in all 3 of those areas, not Europe. The difference between Europe and the US is that the legacy carriers have made more progress to catch up on those fronts than the EU flag carriers have (thanks bankruptcy!) - especially on the labor front. Meanwhile Southwest has morphed into a hybrid - they never seem to be cheaper than AA or UA out of Chicago anymore.

In the US, there seems to be room for both. In Europe, the legacy carriers are probably dependent on restricted competition on overseas routes to survive with their current cost structure.

We’ve been using frontier for years now and really can’t complain too much. As long as you know going in you’re on a cheaper flight and learn how the play the games it’s a lot cheaper than competition

budgets work when time isn’t an issue, but can be a nightmare. I had friends that were spending a week in England then a week in Belguim. Price was #1 and they flew out of luton or stansted, but had to leave london at 5:30 to catch a bus, to then fly, to then take another bus as they had to wait and take another bus. So in thier quest to save 50 L they spent 20l on a bus ticket, wasted 4 hours and another 20 euros on another bus ticket.

Just build more runways and terminals at the other airports besides Heathrow with high speed train connections to the city. Pay for all of those with the money you get from selling all the land that’s currently occupied by Heathrow. Problem solved.

I think low costs and their point to point implementation made the A380 half the success Airbus expected. It’s only a matter of time until they take over hubs, with their increasingly efficient smaller planes.

There’s always room for both, as long as low costs focus on offering the best price and regular airlines focus on improving the experience on board. Some people just want more.

Agree. There’s a place for both —
