Resentment had been growing for my shitty 2000 GMC Yukon Denali. It’s not that GMT400 trucks are junk, they’re not, but this particular one is. So now it’s been replaced by something completely and totally in all ways different: a GMT800 Tahoe. See! Totally different!

This is, as far as trucks like this go, a very nice one. Oddly it’s an AWD system with a selectable 4-low, not the regular 4wd system you typically see, and I’m fine with that since if my wife ever has to drive it there will be less to do if the weather is bad.

It’s a 5.3 (my wife’s 05 Escalade is a 6.0, so I don’t know how to feel about that), 170k-ish miles, cold air, radio works, rear entertainment, almost new Cooper Discoverer tires.

Only issue seems to be with the stability control. It sometimes bogs, acting like it thinks a wheel is spinning so it cuts power. But when I turn the system off, no issues at all. To that end I have to believe it’s at best a wheel speed sensor and at worst the Stabilitrak control module. Either way not the end of the world.

For all this big ass American iron, I’m paying $2500 from a small local dealer/repair shop. I feel really good about the truck for the money, especially considering it’s closer than I’m comfortable admitting to what I paid for the aforementioned GMT400 Denali.

I have a soft spot for these trucks having had a 2002 suburban for about a year. I loved that truck, it was fantastic.

No, 400's are garbage. I always wanted one, so I test drove a few. My GM hate has subsided, but the 400 is a piece of garbage.

That’s a really good buy! The front wheel speed sensors are notoriously problematic, but they are also cheap. Sometimes you just need to clean the mating surface between the sensor and the hub.

Good to know it wasn’t just me. This Tahoe feels about 50 years newer.

I was looking at a few 2002s, but I wanted the new style steering wheel, haha. This thing has so many cubbie compartments, I love it.

It’s the best one I looked at while also being the cheapest by $1500. I mean, I can’t argue that.

Not at all. That’s the kind of price you don’t argue with, you just bust out the cash.

Then the 900 is a downward spiral after thr 800. I genuinely like the 800, and I plan on getting one at some point, with the 8.1.

IIRC, the new steering wheel got cluster issues. When my Dad got his Suburban 2500, he specifically looked for a 2001-2002 for that reason.

Interesting. I liked my wife’s a lot, so I wanted this setup. Mine seems to work correctly, so no complaints yet.

Pretty much that. After driving the Yukon I’m just amazed at stuff like a working radio, and air conditioning, and headlights that are kinda bright. And brakes that work!

I was looking at a Yukon 2500 with an 8.1, thinking about putting a plow on it and making some money over the winter when I get laid off in a month or so. But I ended up with this one, and I’m fine with that. Big block would have been cool though, I’ve never had one.

It’s pretty fun to drive, and it tows our 8k lbs camper like it’s not even there, which is exactly why my Dad chose the 8.1/4.10 combo. It’s a thirsty beast.

GMT 400s are absolute miserable steaming piles of monkey shit. I wanted so badly to love mine, but it never loved me back no matter how much I spent on it.

I LOOOOOOOVE my GMT 800, though.
