Business necessity . A business necessity is a legitimate business purpose that justifies an employment decision as effective and needed to optimally achieve the organization’s goals and ensure that operations run safely and efficiently.

In this case, we don’t have enough business so they decided it is a necessity that I take a few weeks of vacation while we wait for one of several contracts to be signed by the appropriate government officials. Or a severance package. My choice.

On the bright side, I now have the time to go finish the prep work to sell my mom’s place. That isn’t much of a bright side, but it’s work I need to get done.

On the brighter side, my wife passed another of her architectural licensing exams! Four to go.

She passed PcM. She’s taking PiM next Friday and has PA scheduled for next month.

I have no idea what the acronyms stand for....

A few years ago I worked at a marina, and it was slow in the winter. We had just bought a house and my wife had a good job, and I also knew a lot of the other guys didn’t have that situation. I volunteered to take a temporary layoff and used the time to work on our house. I may have snuck in some skiing, as I picked up some hours at a local ski shop owned by a friend. It wasn’t the best winter for us, but it did allow me to do the punchlist that I’d probably still be working on 8 years later.

It may not be ideal by any means, but it sounds like it’s temporary and it will give you some time... hang in there.

Thanks. It happened all over our division. I was one of the few they put on leave. The rest were given their walking papers.

Since I have to hang out in Baton Rouge next week, I’m already eyeballing the projects I can complete. The week after will be working at my mom’s place.

I get to hang onto my work laptop and phone - evidence that they really do need me to come back. I won’t have work internet access at home, but the data plan on the phone is unlimited. hmmmmm.

Is she doing 5.0?

I think so. She originally learned to draw by hand, then in some ancient version of AutoCAD that was command-line only. She had a lot of trouble drawing fast enough in new drawing software for the test. She kept trying to enter the keyboard commands for AutoCAD and they don’t work in the testing software.

The latest version of the exam requires plan interpretation and review (two things she’s been doing for years), but doesn’t require any drawing.

At least that’s my understanding of it.

Yea, the CAD program they used for 4.0 was a drafting program specifically for the exam and thats it. it sucked. All the drawing portions were dumb and didn;t translate well to real work thinking.

That’s pretty much the same thing she said.

Did you complete 4.0 or 5.0?

I’d be looking for the next job ASAP. In my experience temporary layoffs have a tendency to work their way into more permanent layoffs as the remaining employees figure out how to do more work when the new work shows up. Good luck and go for some bike rides.

Thanks. I’m already on the hunt!

To be fair, I’ve been through one of these before. There are also two contracts with my name on them that are just waiting to be signed (have to wait for council meetings to get that part done) and four pursuits, two of which have a very high likelihood of getting under contract. It’s just a matter of timing.

But I will be looking....

Bike rides are also part of my forced-vacation plan. I’ve been off the bike too long.

So, furlough? That sucks. Make the most of your time, and be on the lookout for the next thing, if need be.

Congrats to Mrs. RBB!

Sounds like work is on the way. I get freaked out when things get thin. I am the only money maker in my house. We would be screwed in a couple of months without my income.

Paycheck to paycheck with a little bit of a buffer, that’s how most of us live.

I am currently the only income in the house. My wife quit her job so she could focus on passing her architecture licensing exams. Once she’s licensed, we’ll go back to two incomes. In the mean time, we are cooking lots of rice and beans!
