On my way back to work on my lunch break in my MR2, and all of a sudden it gets CRAZY loud. Limped it home and found this. The muffler was the last new OE part for the Supercharged MR2s in North America when I bought it, and no more exist. There are no bolt-on aftermarket options. The cat was part of a downpipe assembly that is no longer made either. They have been on the car for only like 5 years. I might just buy components off Summit and make my own exhaust at this point. I’m so tired of the rust.

Time to weld up a stainless system. Vibrant performance has good stuff. I have their straight thru muffler on the miata and love it

Lol, reminds me of my 86 SR5 - I was going up a mountain pas and had the 22re wound.. It was already pretty loud and then Waaaaaaaa-bangWAAAAAAAAA! had to go back and pick the muffler off the road behind me.. The other 4 hours of the drive home was loud.

My exhaust rusted off behind both cats on my Grand Marquis winter beater and it sounds glorious.

It’s probably not as loud from outside your car as it is from inside. Enjoy it until you are legally forced to fix it.

I had an HKS when I bought the car and adored it. However it too rusted through and I replaced it with the last new OE muffler because they are impossible to find, as they have been discontinued for a long time. Fujitsubo may be available, but they are crazy expensive.

I’d need to get a different gas setup for my welder to do stainless. I’ve never tried. Is it harder than mild steel?

yes its a bit different. I dont do it myself but the shop i go to does it often. but he also TIG welds a lot. I mostly stick to the MIG and just steel when i DIY

Looks like 5Zigen also makes one. Going price on Yahoo Auctions is about $350USD+shipping. Looks pretty loud, though.
