Mrs. Trickjos is quite a bookworm. She’s read more than 250 books so far this year, and she has a full time job. Anyway, we’re coming up on our second wedding anniversary and she wanted some nice shelves for her books. Here’s my gift to her.

Here’s how we connect this to Oppositelock, my Saturn towing the lumber.

I love Makita tools. The saw is a 50007F and the drill is an XPH07.

Adding trim to match the doors. Our house was built in 1928 so I think it deserves a little extra effort.

Late night painting.

Complete! Just needs a bit of touch up paint at the base.

Mrs. Trickjos was quick to make it her own. So colorful!

Damn I miss building things - and if anyone asks you where you bought it, you have my permission to throw them out of the house.

I love building things for the house so much, and I’m damn proud of this shelf. Anyone who suggests I paid someone to do it will immediately be corrected.

And if the word IKEA is uttered, excommunication is warranted. Last thing I built was a workbench in the basement of a house I used to own. Next owner got it because it was too big and too sturdy to take out.

Oh man. I bet that was satisfying. Looks great, makes me want to restart my condo remodel that’s been on hold for the last 18 months

Looks really really good man. One thought from a fellow builder / person who dates a heavy reader, be sure to put something in to keep it from racking. Either anchor the verticals to the wall or put a partial solid back, or something... it’s really gorgeous but I know firsthand how heavy books are and how willing they are to screw around with your furniture!

At this point, I’m trusted to do minor plumbing and minor electric in our 600SF apartment, but little else. Built-ins will be done (if required) by the guys that service the building or some other cabinet-maker. It’s out of my hands. But thanks for the offer - it’s a leap of faith to lend out tools or DVDs.

The bookshelf looks great. I mean, really nice.

But the first thing to come to mind reading before I clicked in:

“ she wanted some nice shelves for her books”

Is that trim actually original? I know I’ve seen a lot of new(er) houses recently that have this exact trim configuration, which is pretty modern.

Good job on making it look like it is part of the house.

Also: You’re going to wish you never encouraged keeping/owning books when you move elsewhere. Books are so heavy and annoying to move.

Thanks for the tip. The shelf is anchored to the wall and at about 90% capacity already. Everything seems good so far.

Yes, the trim is original or at least has been there since the house was relatively new. Our neighbor has lived in her house since the 1940's and was close with the original owners of my house. According to her, my house is mostly as it was originally with the exception of the kitchen and bathroom being reconfigured in the early 2000's. It’s a modest house, but everything in it has a timeless design that just needs some fresh paint once in a while.

 Nice job on the shelves.

Tell me about the little trailer. How big is it? Where did you get it? Do you like it?

I may be in the market for a little utility trailer soon.
