Want a manual and the nice stereo? Fuck you. Want a manual and a quiet interior (an issue on previous Accords)? Fuck you. Want a manual and heated seats? $30,000. Want Sport Mode? Buy the Touring model for some fucking reason. The 2017 Accord Sport Special Edition is $25,515 and has heated seats and a 10-way power driver’s seat. the 2018 Accord Sport 1.5T is $25,780 and loses both.

The 2017 sport special edition is the Accord to buy IMO. I really like them and for some reason, even though I have no need for another car (another sedan, too) I want to go test drive one.

Next they dump the manual entirely, complaining the take rate was low.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD OFFER IT WITH OTHER NICE THINGS TOO

The Special Edition Hondas are always the best value in the lineup. I think of it as the last hurrah of the current model line before a new one comes out.

Even though I don’t love it, my 15 Civic SE really had all the things I wanted in it except paddle shifters.

This is why “packages” need to go away. Why can I not just select the options that I’d like?

Honda and Toyota both do this stuff, and it drives me up a wall. I don’t want a moonroof or leather. But in order to get the 10 speaker stereo and paddle shifters I need to get those as well.

Also, I don’t even want 17" wheels. Let alone the 19" ones on the sport models. Unless this car is hiding some massive 18" brakes, there’s no purpose for those wheels at all, especially on a “sport” model.

In other news, Mazda announced the 2017.5 6 Touring gets nav and heated seats standard, but has the same snoozefest engine. Still, last time there was a half-model year car, they came out with a new generation the next year.

Reasons I got rid of my 14 Accord Sport? Crappy base stereo, limited-to-no noise insulation, and no heated seats for my cold tushy. Boo for the cold, uncomfortable tushy listening to bad radio!

Some things never change....

I’m waiting for the day I can go to Amazon, and build the car I want online (pick the color, wheels, transmission type, etc, etc,) and some giant factory of 3-D printers will whip out my car in a few hours and Amazon Prime will send a blimp to land it in front of my house in 24 hours. No sales people, no bullshit, with all the options, colors, engines, etc that I want.

Honda has always had a tendency to aggressively tier things. The MSRP on my 2009 Civic Si was a little over $25k, but it didn’t/ couldn’t have heated seats, leather, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, or caller ID in the nav because those were “Accord features”.

I DON’T GIVE A SHIT! Why can’t I just get a car in a configuration I want it in?

Ok, I’ll go there: screw manual transmission versions of boring appliance cars. They suck.

I like cars that are good at relaxed cruising, with comfy rides and roomy interiors. They’re good for road trips, and putzing around town when you want to chill and be comfy. The tradeoff is they’re not entertaining.

I also like cars that are fun to drive and let you shift for yourself. They’re good for putting a smile on your face while driving like a doofus. The tradeoff is you have to shift all the time, and there’s probably more noise and a bumpier ride.

I don’t care if a particular family sedan is on the sportier end of the family sedan spectrum, it is still inherently a relaxed comfy cruiser. I want to relax in it. I don’t want to shift it. A stick shift makes it less relaxing and it’s still not sporty.

Embrace the relaxed comfy cruiser. Don’t pollute it with shifting.

Could be worse.

They could pull a Nissan and offer the Altima and Maxima with a CVT only.

Though I suppose the CVT makes the most sense for cars like these.

You can. Buy something expensive and German like a BMW or Porsche, or a fullsize domestic pickup. You can factory order however you’d like with a bazillion different options.

Anything Japanese? No soup for you!

I truly hate the Steptronic in my E46, and the 8spd ZF in the current 3-Series is garbage to me as well. I really miss my Cherokee with the 5spd manual, so any manual option will work for me except the pile of base-optioned garbage the new Accord is going to be.

True, but if I could afford a Porsche, I probably wouldn’t get bent out of shape over $2k in options.

Here’s my take on the whole ‘trim levels’ thing which hampers you guys in the States (not really a problem we have over here as you can generally option stuff how you want, so it must suck for you guys).

Don’t buy a new car. It’s a terrible financial decision even before you get into actually buying something you want.

Set aside 1/2 of the money you’d have spent and buy a used car. Use 1/4 of the remainder to buy the bits you want off other trim levels that people have crashed and mash them together to make a car tailored for you for 3/4 the price of a car that only has some of the stuff you want.

Still struggle to wrap my head around the benefits of buying a new car, so might just be me :S

The Steptronic does suck, for a performance car. It can be made to suck much less on E9x and similar cars using xHP Flashtool .

I liked the DCT in my 135is and I thought the ZF8 was really nice when I tried it in an M235xi and X3 35i.

My WJ and WK both had kinda crap transmissions but I don’t care because neither of them is a performance vehicle. The only thing I really didn’t like was that 5th in the WK was way tall and it didn’t like to kick down just into 4th with a gentle nudge on the gas, you had to floor it which would kick down to 3rd and then it was BWAAAAAAAA UNLEASH THE NASCAR FURY BWAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Which was kinda fun in a way, but not exactly smooth.

But that’s not the point. I’m talking appliance cars. Let them be appliances. An Accord is an appliance. I don’t want to shift it. I am not in the “any car is better with a manual” camp. Many cars are worse with a manual.

I think my problem is I can’t have an appliance car. I want to drive our Pilot off a cliff when I’m forced to commute with it for over a couple days. I need something more engaging, and my E46 is perfect except for the missing manual and 2 doors. It’s a shame that the only engaging family sedan that comes with a manual is under-powered (Mazda6).

exactly... but when you need a car with more space/doors, and want a manual transmission, there are limited options. if we limit it to new cars: chevy ss, golf r, gti, audi sports sedans, bmw sports sedans, ford focus st, wrx. that is all i can think of....

I’m open to used. It seems like I’m out of luck unless I go with an F30 or E9x, something along those lines.

An automatic will never pick the right gear for me when I attempt to pass or I’m charging up an inclined road. It’ll either drop down too many, and now I’m at redline trying to pass, or it’ll drop one gear, then decide that isn’t enough and drop another gear, twice as many changes as I would make with a manual. It’s quicker then my Steptronic, but I still hate the shifting. I learned to drive in a manual car, and had one for seven years. I’ve been driving my E46 since 2013 and I still get frustrated that I don’t get to pick the gear.

Totally understand. I am getting that sort of behavior from my car, of not having the full control but I am living with it for now.

But... why can’t I enjoy driving my manual transmission and also enjoy having a nice, comfy appliance car? I loved my ‘96 Accord 5-speed.

My problem with our Volvo XC70 is the road I drive to take the kids to school every day is up and over several big hills, and the Volvo constantly wants to upshift. I can’t maintain the speed I want in 5th or 6th on the autobox, so I press the throttle and it downshifts, but if I don’t let off, I’m going 60 in a 40 so I let off and it upshifts back to 6th, then can’t maintain 40 up the hill... repeat. In my E46 I just leave it in 4th the entire way. And my mileage is only 0.4mpg less in my E46 than the Volvo.

Sure I can use the manual-mode shifting, I guess. But I really only need it to go up hills, the auto is fine the rest of the time. I find it annoying to HAVE to use the manual mode in a comfy appliance car that should just do the shifting for me. Which it does really well, most of the time, it just happens to really annoy me on the road I drive every day, 4 times back and forth.

That’s more a problem with a dumb automatic transmission than anything else.

I’d rather have an occasionally dumb automatic transmission in an appliance car than have to shift for myself all the time.

Or just a better automatic transmission.

10/20/2017 at 14:40, STARS: 0

To each his own, I guess. I don’t mind shifting because, as in the example of my daily drive, I shift into 4th and then not again for most of the drive.

And I agree that the Volvo’s automatic is stupid, or maybe the car is a little underpowered for its gearing? If it had a “sport” mode or any way to tweak the shift points, I’d do that in a second.

My DD is a stick shift as well, but it’s not an appliance car. I bought my car because it’s engaging to drive. But if I had a boring car I’d have it because it’s relaxing to drive.

I hear you on that. I’m still that guy who wants a manual transmission on my Family Truckster. Maybe because I grew up with manual Chrysler minivans, manual plow trucks, manual everything even things that shouldn’t be.

My E46 wagon is walking a fine line between family hauler and fun DD.
