Convertible or Coupe

I think if I were to buy an F-Type I would want the convertible. Though the coupe is very very pretty as well. Now I want to know which you would pick and why. You can have all the options and long as it is a manual V6S trim. Since the V8 doesn’t get the manual it isn’t an option. So if you were to get the V6S with a manual, would you want the coupe of the vert?

Update: The coupe has 80% more rigidity

Coupe - because there are very, very few convertibles I would buy (not a fan of them) and the F-Type is not one of them.

But why is that?

That’s very much a personal preference - in general, convertibles are heavier and have less structural rigidity - so slower and don’t corner as well (though the differences usually aren’t big). In addition, they have less trunk and rear seat space (irrelevant here) and are noisier/rattle more. New, they cost more, too (not always the case for used sports cars though).

That said, I love convertibles and would *always* choose it over the coupe.

I’d do the coupe, simply because I’ve owned and daily driven a convertible. On the right day, at the right time and at the right speeds, a convertible is a wonderful thing. Most of the rest of the time I found myself longing for a roof. The wind and noise from the top down at highway speeds gets older after 20 or 30 miles, midday sun beating down on you in the desert isn’t fun and temperatures over about 90 leave you wanting cool air blowing at you instead of hot air buffeting your head. The inverse happens in the winter. Sure, you can put the top up, but that isn’t nearly as good as a solid roof keeping things cool and quiet inside.

But I am feeling vert more too, just wanted to know everyone’s preference.

Coupe. The only convertible I would ever own is the S2000.

That said, the convertible F-type makes me tingle. They are very, very good looking.

If it’s going to be the primary vehicle (year round commuting, even in bad weather), get the coupe. If it’s going to be a second car, or if you have an alternate vehicle for rainy/snowy days, get the convertible.

After spending 2 years with my Miata I’ve come to the conclusion that the world would be a happier place if more people drove convertibles. It doesn’t have to be a Miata. Sure it’s not perfect for every situation but on a good day it’s a thousand times better than a hard top, structural rigidity be damned. Are you going to autocross it? If not, it will be plenty stable.

The convertible. It is an enjoyable luxury option.

Obvious answer is obvious. Granted I’ve only owned it for 6 days and the top has been down at least once every day. My answer could change during winter.

I live in a place where top-down driving isn’t practical 4+ months out of the year (the top shouldn’t be operated at temps below 40F and I don’t want to drive it on salted roads), and I’ll still take a convertible every time.

Right though? I think think there is just enough tingle to get a vert over the coupe.

That is a fair comparison, though the “coupe” is a targa. In the instance of the Miata I do not siee the RF being a reasonable markup for a “roof”

I just don’t see myself as a convertible owner. I would probably put a hardtop on an S2K. I’d also own a 986 Cayman if they existed.

Yeah, I live outside of Chicago, so top down driving is limited, but I still have an E46 convertible. And, although you *shouldn’t* operate the top below 40F, I still do it on rare occasions (the car sits most of the time between Nov-March really though).

Ah I just meant in general, not necessarily for the Miata. IMHO everyone who likes cars should have a convertible at least once. Its a different experience and when you boil it down, experiences is all were getting from cars.

On the roads around tail of the dragon I literally could smell the woods and heard birds chirping. Confirmed my purchase.

I dreamed of owning a convertible from the time I was old enough to know what a convertible was - I was probably only 5 or 6 years old, no joke.

Bought my first car, a 2 door hardtop that was a great car, at 16. When a HS classmate put his ‘65 Skylark for sale (a stunningly beautiful piece of shit), I immediately flipped the 1st to buy the 2nd, and never looked back.

The RF is the one example I know of where the ‘coupe’ is actually heavier than the ‘vert. It’s a complete non-starter for me.

The 911 Targa was attractive when there was no convertible option, so I get that - but the new one? Nope. It’s a pretty car, but gimme the cab.

I’m in PA, so while there are occasional late fall/early spring days where the daytime temp is warm enough, November-March generally means relegating the Miata to the garage.

I’ve got a 94 Miata, and it still has the original vinyl top. The colder it gets, the stiffer and more tight it feels. Once in the winter, I had the top down on a rare warm day. I parked it in the garage and left the top down. 2 days later I’m driving a friend to the bar and we kept the top down even though it was about 35 degrees outside. Nothing that you can’t handle with a sweatshirt and turning up the heat. We get to the bar, and I go to raise the manual top and it stopped about 6 inches short of being fully closed. Lesson learned.

I’m trying to avoid replacing the top so if it’s going to be close to 40F I keep it up.

I suppose it depends on the convertible. My 94 Miata isn’t exactly watertight these days, and the way they salt the roads here in PA would lead to rust issues.

Coupe for me, but mostly because Houston only has ten or so days per year that are good convertible weather.

Some reason with the 911 the cab looks ugly to me. Unlike the F-Type, where it is a hard choice.

I don’t know, just never liked them. Maybe I feel like they’re less of a sports car being a convertible (or in other cases they are vehicles that shouldn’t be convertibles like the Murano/Evoque/etc).

My ‘00 323 is still basically watertight as long as it’s not in a car wash. Rattles are another story. The salt is definitely a killer - but that’s true for any nice coupe as well.

Personally, I think the F-type is a gorgeous car in either configuration.

and yeah, the 911 cab is nowhere near as good looking as the coupe - that may be one car where I’d have to think hard between body styles.

The advantage of a coupe in the winter is that I can take it to my local car wash, drive it through the tunnel and get the undercarriage sprayed to remove a decent amount of that slush and salt. But PA winter storms are the reason I’m keeping my 2003 Honda Civic that’s already been totalled thanks to Hurricane Matthew.

Coupe.

The liftback on the coupe makes it a better grand tourer, more rigidity doesn’t hurt at sports car ability.

Then, for the engine... I’ll take the 340 hp supercharged V6 over the 300 hp turbocharged I4, and give me a manual.

Exactly. I watched a video and one guy described the F-Type as fanfare for the watcher and you lose a lot inside the car, but with the roof off, then you are part of it all!

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)
10/04/2017 at 14:56, STARS: 0

Uh, I didn’t even know they made it with a 4cyl. lol thats sad. Why settle for the 340 hp when you can have the 380hp V6 and a manual.

Kinja'd!!! "bhtooefr" (bhtooefr)
10/04/2017 at 15:24, STARS: 0

Because really I would want the I4's power or less, to make it better at slow-car fast, I just don’t want an a small engine that’s been boosted within an inch of its life.

Like, a naturally aspirated V6 would be about right, IMO.

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)
10/04/2017 at 15:27, STARS: 0

Hmm, odd. Doesn’t seem like the right car to be slow car fast. I feel like that just would not be enough power for such a powerful looking vehicle.

But interesting take on it nonetheless.

Kinja'd!!! "bhtooefr" (bhtooefr)
10/04/2017 at 16:02, STARS: 1

Well, that’s why I wouldn’t buy a F-Type, it’s not what I’d actually want in a sports coupe. But, if I had to, give me the least engine that’s not a hand grenade in the engine bay, and a manual.
