One of the bigger things left to do for getting back on the racetrack next year is buying a new trailer. I’ve been there, done that with a janky old trailer, and the price difference between a used car trailer in decent shape and a new one isn’t enough to make me want to buy some else’s old trailer again. After spending much of the summer looking both in person and online at new trailers, I’ve found what I want. I face a decision on what color to tell the manufacturer to paint it, as I plan to place an order later this week.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll have Carson trailer build me a 16 foot, open center, car hauler to the narrower 77" deck width (versus the standard 82" for car trailers) with electric brakes on one axle. For options, I’ll do 4" drop axles, a spare tire mount and the breakaway kit set up from the factory. They’ve got a dealer in Tucson, so it’ll give me a reason to take a drive there from El Paso in a month or two.

Everyone has a black trailer. Part of me is tempted to go for bright red trailer (and maybe even white wheels, too) to match the racecar and the white on red color scheme it runs. The real downside I see is that at some point a red trailer becomes a pink trailer, especially living outside in the desert southwest. In theory I could commit to throwing a coat of cleaner wax on it from time to time and prolong the red. It would look something a lot like this, but without the front rail that I don’t want.

The pragmatist in my says to go with white paint, as a white trailer will still look white for a very long time. White would match the accent color of the wheels, numbers and letters on the racecar, and it would match my white truck. Part of me thinks that it would be a little less interesting. What color does oppo vote for?

That Integra tho... mmmmm

Listen. You can’t have the trailer be same color as car. It looks confusing. Where does the car end and where does the trailer begin?

I vote yellow. I had a 1989 Acura Integra LS 5sp. Absolutely loved that car. Red too. I put yellow stripes on it. It looked sooo good. White works too, but trailer being in trailer business, white might get dirty. Yellow will too, but maybe less so.

I vote for yella or hwhite

Yellow... interesting idea. As for white, the car has always run a white on red color scheme as a tribute to the old Comptech IMSA cars that ran and won a couple of class championships in 86 and 87.

I have been thinking about a stripe. I’d do a single white stripe down the center, cut to match the bulge in the hood and continuing on over the roof and down the back.

Black. I know everyone has a black trailer, but it’s just a trailer. I think white will be hard to keep clean, and look much worse when dirty. The other huge advantage to black is that it will be very easy to touch up when (not if) it gets chipped, and/or rusts, a can of gloss black spray paint and you’re good to go.

If it absolutely cant be black, then I think red is a good choice, I’d also really like blue, but that might look odd with your red car. Then again, with your red car, white truck and a blue trailer you’d be the rolling embodiment of ‘merica.

They are few and far between these days. It has been a long time since I’ve seen a clean one on the road in person.

White. You’re in the desert SW. White reflects lots of sunlight and does not get so damn hot.
Visual downside/maintenance feature: It’s gonna show off those rust spots really well.

Ones I see are either 4 door, or 4 door and automatic, or made out of swiss cheese.

I would love to come see you race. Read that as I would love to come see your car. I don’t care too much about the race ;)

My old, janky trailer was white, and it certainly showed off the rust spots. It also came from a mountainous area of Colorado where it lived outside for a decade before I bought it. I think rust would be a lesser concern this time around.

How about gray? It’s not black, and when ever it fades, it simply turns more (or less) gray.

I could get it in dark green, which is my favorite color, but it wouldn’t match anything.

Incorrect. Green matches everything. Do it.

Does it have to be painted a colour? why not galvanise it, that will protect it from rusting and also will mean no paint chips to touch up every now and then

I was reminded the other day why I don’t like things painted black (full disclosure, I inherited a black trailer). A commercial truck with a white cab and black metal bed pulled across the road in front of me a few days ago. It was well before dawn, so it was really dark. The area where it happened is far enough outside of town that there aren’t any streetlights.

Other than a lone reflector at the back end of the truck and the white cab, most of the truck was effectively invisible.

Kinja'd!!!

Like this truck, but with black wheels.

After that experience I think it’s a good idea to add some reflective tape to the sides of my black trailer so it’s more visible at night.

could always enquire if they can? or even if they can’t find someone in the area who could? as it would help with the resale value

I went with an all aluminum trailer with a fiberglass deck. The only things that can rust are the axles and hitch. Plus, it’s a lot lighter and I can carry more (or put less strain on my truck).

I would love an aluminium trailer, but it just isn’t in the budget.

I like black as it is easier to touch up with black gloss rustoleum. I have a similar rig that I have used about 25 years. It’s a home built with aluminum ramps and no suspension. It allows a minivan tow vehicle and works great.

That’s a neat little trailer. If I had more confidence in my welding skills, I’d probably do something similar.

You have a red car and a white truck. I say go full ‘Murica and get a blue trailer.

Black. Trailers make really tempting targets for thieves for some reason so it is easier to hide a black one.

Built by a stock car fabricator. Mostly square tube. surge brakes. 80's chevy FWD rear hubs. At least 100,000 miles on it. The one downside is tires last exactly 5 years as I recently confirmed 200 miles from home...

Kinja'd!!!

Luckily the 30 year old mini spare held air.

I’ve never had a trailer tire actually wear out on anything. They always dry rot away long before they ever show much tread wear. I have had a couple tread separations on various trailers.
