Kinja'd!!!

Small engines, generators, snowmobile engines, pumps, agricultural equipment, etc, etc.

I say “made” cause they don’t anymore. They decided that making cars was enough fun for them so they are closing down the side business thats been running since 1951.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Turns out they also changed their name from Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) to “Subaru Corporation” Which goes from sounding “industrial badass” to sounding a little more “Form 2378".

I guess they are really serious about growing the car business. Good for them?

Not sure if they make it or if it’s just a branding thing, but there are Subaru power washers at our local Costco. And apparently they are PowerStrokes...must be a hell of a power washer lol.

interesting. Good for Yamaha. I didn’t even know Subaru made small engines until last year, at least Yamaha will have some brand recognition behind it.

FHI Used to also make buses and trains as well, and still make aircraft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Corporation

true I have one and its great. The real news here though is that Subaru is ditching anything unrelated to cars. Bye bye Subaru small engines.

Well, FHI made those things, and Subaru Corporation now makes aircraft.

May Asian car makes have a similar story. Honda built motorcycles and piston rings before ever making a car, Hyundai built heavy construction equipment, and I think Mitsubishi was originally a shipbuilder.

FHI lent more credibility to both the robustness and perceived quality of Subaru. I feel this is parallel with the similarly myopic choice to abandon their rally heritage, ditch gold wheels, go after Audi, etc.

Somewhere climbing up the Subaru food chain is at least one MBA who needs to be administered an mmpi test.

Everytime I encounter one of those loud ass, obnoxious generators, I wish ill upon the person operating it and anything dear to them. Especially at a race track, or on a food truck.

Get a quiet one. They’re not much more expensive, and a bazillion times less unpleasant.

Quiet is easy if you don’t need the watts. I have a Honda 2000 and I love the quietness but if i needed more than 2kw there isn’t much you can do to keep it quiet. As someone else said, Yamaha bought most of the Subaru business so...

Here’s the release:

Yamaha Motor Corp., USA’s, (YMUS) Outdoor Power Equipment division today announced the acquisition of Subaru Industrial Power Products. The acquisition is a result of an agreement between parent companies Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., both of Japan, and is expected to be completed by October 1, 2017. Fuji Heavy Industries is ceasing the production and sale of multi-purpose engines, etc. at the end of September 2017.

“Yamaha has made the multi-purpose engine market a priority,” said Jim McPherson, Yamaha’s Outdoor Power Equipment division manager. “Yamaha entered the popular lawn and garden industry earlier this year with the introduction of the all-new MXV-EFI Vertical V-twin series. The Subaru Industrial Power Products acquisition further solidifies Yamaha’s commitment to continuing our recent expansion into this important segment of our business.”

As part of the acquisition, Fuji Heavy Industries will transfer to Yamaha Motor Powered Products Co., Ltd. (YMPC), also of Japan, technology relating to three products: EH65, EH72, and EH65V of the EH Series V-Twin Overhead Valve multi-purpose engine range, which are used in large generators and large lawn mowing machinery. The acquisition of this technology will enable YMPC to sell the EH Series V-Twin Overhead Valve multi-purpose engines both within Japan and overseas, including through YMUS in the United States.

Through the acquisition, YMUS will continue after-sales service for Fuji Heavy Industries’ multi-purpose engine business in North America (excluding Mexico), while further strengthening its power products business in North America.

Yamaha’s all-new line of vertical V-twin engines for the lawn and garden market were initially introduced earlier this year. The MX775V-EFI, MX800V-EFI and MX825V-EFI engines are purpose built for commercial landscape zero-turn radius (ZTR) mowers and combine Yamaha’s historic quality, high performance and durability standards with landscape ZTR-specific design and development, resulting in superior performance and higher fuel efficiency than competitive models on the market.

The future is Asia tbh, and their older business model was better suited to it. Check out how different Buick is over there.

It’s maybe a decade, perhaps two when the SUV craze dies off. Nobody wants to drive around in their parents’ car.
