Oh good. Maybe I do have a future career that doesn’t evolve dropping out of college and becoming a welder or HVAC tech!

lol I’m so glad I got out after my first enlistment. I was considering a 2 year because my unit was deploying again, but everyone I knew got out or went to another duty station. And I hated the all the new privates.

I’m in school for cyber security at the moment. Only 22, but I’ve spent most of my time studying and shit so haven’t made many new friends. My new plan is to start going to class drunk until I make enough friends to start doing E4 shenanigans again.

But Sarge.....

I love my Army brothers. What duty station did you base out of?

I was stationed in NC for 6 of 10 years and did my 4 deployments out of units there.

JBLM. I just did one deployment to Bagram. It was as easy as a “combat” deployment could go. I’d like to mention I enlisted as Field Artillery, but the Army sent me to an Air Defense unit (As one of my NCOs put it, “The gay red headed step-child of field artillery) to do C-RAM at Bagram.

lol one of my best friends was LAD at Cherry Point (low altitude defense). I was a comm-o in artillery and then moved onto FAC/liaison company.

I didn’t even know y’all had ADA. I had a PSG who was in the Marines, but he was Infantry then, so I guess y’all wouldn’t have known him. He was by far my favorite PSG.

One time when we were in the “field” (We go to stay in some old condemed barracks, I was literally on a detail to clean them out for demolition 6 months before.) And he told us for our squad leader’s b-day he wanted us to hog tie him.

So we did and locked ourselves in our bay. Then someone knocks on the door and we look through the peep hole and it’s him smiling. So we open up the door and all the other squad leaders run in with rolls of 100mph and car keys and start beating the shit out of us.

My team leader got hit in the back by a roll of tape and couldn’t move his legs for half and hour afterwards. Good times lol.

Honestly the only good excuse left to stay on-prem IMO....Except for the very few companies that need almost literal 0 latency for some offshoot reason.

Yepppppp....Government Cloud (or lack thereof) is its own monster. I don’t mess around with that.

SOX is a challenge but it can be done. I work with public companies, financial institutions included, everyday that are continuing to convert. There’s inherent risk that has to be acknowledged and carefully circumvented, though. Certainly risks on both sides, really.

It’s frustrating because it’s even getting hard to buy decent hardware anymore. There’s this massive divide and the costs are going up if you’re not buying in bulk.

But it’s still cheaper. It’s why my employer has remained on-prem, along with a really nasty difficult-to-scale custom system that is a lot cheaper to run on our hardware compared to cloud hosting (portions of the network it utilizes are also difficult to replicate). I don’t even have to worry about compliance issues, either, since we’re private. AWS finally released EC2 instances that make it possible to use them without the costs being ridiculous (I ran the numbers a couple years ago and it was $250k to do what we could do for years on $25k of hardware).

Of course we’re running into serious scaling problems now (as I warned them years ago would happen, then last year when we put in a stopgap only expected to last 6 months). Basically, it’s forcing their hand and it’ll move as soon as I get a few things figured out. But it is still a time bomb that needs to be rewritten. I’ve given them the roadmap, but I am so bogged down holding everything together that I can’t develop the solution... The technical debt we’re dealing with is unreal.

Office 365 is awesome. Do it and don’t look back. Nobody in their right mind wants to be an Exchange admin and unless you’re a massive organization it’s hard to justify employing anywhere near the size of team they have dedicated to maintaining it. The cost is so low that I can’t find any way to justify not using it even for the smallest customers...

If you really hate the Exchange/M$ ecosystem (I don’t blame you), G Suite is comparable in price with a slightly different mix of products.

I hate M$ operating systems. My biggest fires that aren’t due to ridiculously-small budgets are almost all related to forced Windows Server patches that fail to install properly or cause the server crash on boot.

The technical debt we’re dealing with is unreal.

This is every company I have seen that has infrastructure or code, whether they know it or not, whether they admit it or not.

I can’t deny that almost every company is like this. Some in the tech industry have a lower amount, but even they’re not immune.

The amount at my current company is so high that it makes me want to jump ship. We’ve been suffering so long that I’m coming to the realization that it’ll never change and there’s no way to dig out of it without a fundamental change in the company that is unlikely to ever happen.

The sad thing is that everyone seems to think cloud solutions avoid them, but they just shift them around and make it easier to endure that debt by throwing money at it.
