My dad used to fly them in the R.A.F. Then he flew them for B.A.E. Out to Saudi Arabia delivering them to the Saudi air force.

There was once he flew from the U.K. To Cyprus to refuel, then was told to go to Medina in Saudi, as he was liveried in Saudi air force markings he was allowed to fly onto Riyadh. But the issue arose when he flew past Medina, just before he was about to turn East for Riyadh, Saudi ATC radiod to say he was getting too close to Mecca, now you’ll know Mecca is home to the holy kabbba and nothing is allowed to get close or fly over the holy kabba as it’s break the pathway to god, well my dad being a dick that he is, chose not to head east and wind Saudi ATC up. He was told repeatedly to alter his course, it was only when he was told he would be shot down that he finally did change course. Suffice to say he got a major bollocking off his superiors.

On the ‘anglo’ base (British, Canadian, Australian and American) south of Riyadh, it was called Bandar something. We used to make our own beer, sneak christmas decorations into the country, basically anything we could do in the west but the Muttaween (religious police) wouldn’t let us do. It livened up what was generally a mundane place.
