I bought me a new MacBook Pro yesterday, and apparently USB-C is now a thing, so I get to buy a cocktail of dongles! Wish my wallet luck!
So far, I know I’ll need:
-USB-C to Lighting
-USB-C to USB/HDMI (combo dongle!)
-USB to SD Card

USB-C is backwards compatible. So if you have USB-2 to Lightning/HDMI/SD card, they’ll all still work.

Funny that you pay a premium for a MacBook Pro and it doesn’t have those built in, and a basic PC based notebook have all those integrated.(except the Lightning)
Progress.....

Moshi sell this multi-adapter that has an SD slot, 2x USB ports and an HDMI port.

For some reason I thought only the non-pro little skinny Macbook had ditched all the ports in favor of USB-C. But I guess you’re right, no more ports. Funny that Apple just has to call USB-C “Thunderbolt 3” even though it’s totally not a Thunderbolt port and really just a USB-C port. At least it still has a headphone jack.
Thankfully my mid-2014 MBP 13 is still totally fine and I have no issues with it. I only occasionally use the HDMI port anymore thanks to my Roku and Chromecast, but it comes in handy on certain occasions. Mostly when we do Christmas at my mother-in-law’s house, I bring my laptop to watch old Christmas movies on tv there. Plus an occasional random stream thing that works better on a computer than Roku/Chromecast. Not much of that anymore.
I definitely use the SD card reader a lot. But I actually already own a USB-C microSD card reader .
I got it because I wanted a micro USB SD card reader to use with my Lenovo Yoga Tab 2, so I could edit photos from my good camera while traveling without my laptop. At the time I bought it there were two versions, one that was micro USB + regular USB, and the one I got that’s micro USB + USB-C. I think I figured more devices were going USB-C so it’d be good to have.
But...hopefully I won’t be in the market for a laptop for a few more years.

And the idiotic proprietary requirement for a million and a half dongles is part of the reason I will never buy an Apple...it’s just unnecessary and a money grab to me!

But you still need a USB C to USB A adapter to be able to plug in your old cables.

USB C can have a Thunderbolt 3 mode with the right controller on the motherboard. I believe all of Apples laptops have Thunderbolt capabilities through the USB C ports.

Ah, my bad. I forgot thunderbolt was stuff like displays and such and something above and beyond USB-C. Now I realize thunderbolt 3 ports use USB-C plugs but not all USB-C ports support thunderbolt.

I bought one of those overpriced little Asian hubs on Amazon for like $50 and two little USB-to-USB-C adapters for $5. Haven’t had a single problem. I’ve actually got more usable ports on my new laptop than I did with my old Windows one. It’s honestly totally doable.
