My wife just found her Explorer sitting with the liftgate wide open. I figured she just pressed the key fob by accident. The weird thing was that another Explorer parked close by was also sitting with the liftgate open.

Thankfully, nothing was missing from her car. There were boxes sitting in the back of the other Explorer, so she didn’t think they lost anything either. It probably wasn’t thieves, but it does make me wonder what the heck is going on.

Must be the special Explorer subspecies. I wonder if the other Explorer was already infested and it passed them along to hers.

The better question is how to get rid of them. I know not to feed them after midnight or get them wet....

Our Subaru fob doesn’t work if there is a cart machine nearby; I think it’s an RF issue..

That’s interference and it doesn’t surprise me. I can’t figure what would cause the liftgates on two Explorers parked near each other to open spontaneously.

We had our garage door randomly opening while having TV signal issues with Time Warner back 10 years ago. After the cable TV was fixed we never had the garage door open on its own again. We’ve now switched to U-verse.

does it have one of those ones where you wave your foot underneath and it opens?

No. It will open with the remote, a button on the dash, or the button under the handle.

well there goes my theory of a cat running under the bumper and accidentally activating it then.

GM uses what is called a double shot relay to release their trunks and liftgates. When said relay fails, it results in the phantom liftgate. If Ford uses a similar system, and you can find the relay in the vehicle, you may be able to remedy your situation.

May be what kept happening to my 2017. I would close on the lift gate and walk away but there is a proximity aspect to the lift gate. So, if you walk just far enough since the gate takes awhile to close, it just opens again. You’d really think they would just keep closing but it stops mid close, and opens.
