Kinja'd!!!

Here is my new $500 project car. Shall we take a look?

This thing is big! I’m pretty sure it rivals the ‘64 pickup lengthwise. A pleasant surprise by the light of day, there is less rot visible than i remembered.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

The passenger side is the worst, with the quarter being most rotted. However all the rot I’ve found is on flat areas that will be easy to cut out and weld in patches.

Kinja'd!!!

The blue velour interior is in good shape, except for some badly dried out plastic pieces in the rear. It smells of old cigarettes and cheap air freshener, so it will need some deep cleaning. I also need to scrub the steering wheel so it isn’t sticky.

Kinja'd!!!

“Find one in every car. You’ll see.”

Kinja'd!!!

Wheels are in decent shape. I hope to sell these for enough to fund replacement wheels & tires that are more rugged looking.

Kinja'd!!!

The rear hatch handle is broken, and the mechanism seems stuck. The seller got it open when i looked at it but not easily. There is a similar wagon at a local junkyard, so hopefully i can get the piece i need.

Kinja'd!!!

Now to the meat of it. The engine will start and run with a good battery, but the alternator is dead. It also has an electrical drain that ahe said will kill the battery overnight.

So the plan is:

Replace the battery & alternator.

Find and fix the electrical issue.

Scrub the interior.

Fix the rust.

Get it registered and do some shakedown drives as it has been sitting for a year.

Look for compatible springs that will raise it 1-2" and firm up the ride w/o going full dump truck.

Get better wheels with all-terrain tires & sell current wheels.

Weld up new bumpers out of plate steel with integrated light protectors.

??

Profit.

If you can get your hands on an ozone maker it’ll get rid of the cigarette smell. Or any other smell, really. They’re pretty cheap on Amazon if you can’t find one to borrow for an hour. Just plug it in, put the windows up and close the doors and set the timer to run for an hour and you’ll be set. Just don’t breathe the raw ozone as it’s highly irritating to your throat and lungs. It dissipates quickly so it’s easy to avoid.

If it ends up beimg somwrhing complicated or expensive that will be my solution.

Given it sat for a year, I’m hoping i just need to clean corrosion off a switcch or light socket.

Two tips for you: CarpetFresh and Rock Auto.

Carpet Fresh can get rid of smoke smell from upholstery (though it might stink like carpet fresh for a week or so).

Rock auto sells stock replacement springs, and something as universal as the Panther should have a few different models to choose from, and you should be able to find a stiffer spring from a Lincoln or a police model or just overload wagon springs. Rock Auto should list spring rates and heights, so you can have an idea how much height you’ll gain.

It also eats everything in the car alive. Plastics get brittle, foam breaks down, metals oxidize, paint oxidizes, etc. Cars are not built to endure such strong oxidizers and we’ve had bad results when filling cars with ozone...

Of course the garbage they sell on Amazon probably doesn’t put out very much (we’ve seen many that didn’t even put out any, or so little that it wouldn’t do anything, along with some that produced a huge amount, but only for the first couple hours before the generator burned out).

I know because I’ve worked extensively with ozone generation systems used in critical environments.

I’m going for a less ambitious version of that as i don’t have a trophy tuck fabrication shop nor tens of thousands to hire one

I applaud you for taking this on, but I wouldn’t fool much with the rust, beyond maybe tack welding some sheet metal over top and rattle-canning with a similar color.

Inspection? Where do you live?

Kinja'd!!! "Pixel" (Improbcat)

Rhode Island. Classic cars don’t have the same inspection as newer cars, but big rust holes into the passenger compartment are still a problem.
