Kinja'd!!!

Convert my MR2 from a 5x114.3 to 5x120 bolt pattern, such that I can slap on a staggered set of 18x8 and 18x8.5 BMW Style 162s? And any suspension geometry changes to accommodate the large wheels? I just really want Style 162s...

Not a lot of work and some expense...

wheel adapters are inherently not the safest, cheap ones even more so. a decent set of known brand adapters are gonna be $150 bucks for a set, then you might have to spend another 100 on spacers to make it fit right.

style 162's look like they’re going for around 500-600

pretty good, not great tires big enough for those 18's are probably going to be like 150 bucks a pop, 200 if you want good ones. plus 50 bucks for getting them mounted and balanced somewhere that isn’t going to fuck up your rims.

so 1200 bucks in all, at minimum.

what kind of mr2? sw20? I know the 18's on tavarish’s sw20 really don’t fit.

just a quick google tells me you’ll get rubbing issues with 18's, you’ll at least have to roll fender, and you’ll also have to run basically no sidewall.

remember, even if they do fit those big wheels are going to feel/be slow on your car that was engineered for something much smaller.

I wouldn’t be able to own an SW20 MR2 and not find it a set of 17" R32 or R33 GTR wheels. I have a set of R33 GTR wheels that have found their way onto five different cars and they always look so OEM yet forged awesome and 9" wide. Just my oppopinion.

You may have been able to re-drill hubs for the new size, but it looks like the rear hubs have holes right where you would want the new holes.

I also like OEM looking wheel upgrades. I approve, but the market for 5x114.3 is so huge I can’t see how some other wheels wouldn’t work.

Does anyone offer hubs for your MR2 in 5x120? If not, consider passing.

Do you know the required offset so you aren’t hitting suspension uprights or brake calipers? What about fender clearance?

Will the steering knuckles/rack and other joints be able to handle the increased rotational mass?

This really isn’t as simple as “slap an adapter on” especially if you have lug studs on the existing hub.

The easiest thing would be to sell the MR2 and buy an E90 with style 162s on the car.

stud pattern aside, 8x18 +34 on the front will likely need spacers to clear the suspension and flares to cover the tires.

There’s heaps more room in the back so you’ll just need spacers to get them flush and then roll the guards.
There’s no 5x120 hub conversion that I’m aware of, a couple of guys I know have switched to R32/R33 hubs for the brakes.

I had 18's on my first MR2 about a decade ago, it was shit.

I don’t know weights, but I have a feeling those would be really heavy wheels for an MR2. If getting new wheels, might as well find some light ones.

S/he lives in California, where roadworthy means you have lights, passed emissions, and your biennial check to the state cleared. We share roads with cars that ought to have been scrapped years ago and ones with the “uhhh you sure that’s a good idea?” modifications.

GT-R wheels look fantastic. Also a much easier fit than Style 162s. Thank you for the advice, I’ll check out more of the options.

Everyone tells me that 18s would ruin the handling, and I’m beginning to understand that that’s probably true.

Yup, it’s an SW21, the NA version of the SW20. 130 hp with 18s might be pretty glacial too. Thank you for estimating the budget, as that gives good perspective on this bad idea... hahaha I guess BMW parts are expensive even if put on a Toyota.

Ideally I should get some 15s and call it a day. If there was a similar-looking wheel to the BMW ones, but from an OEM that does 5x114.3, I’d probably do that if they fit.

you do you man, but just know that that size will have poke and the fronts fenders will need embiggening.

If your roads are pretty good then you can probably get away with it. Mine are shit so I downsized to R32 GTR wheels and gained heaps of tire wall. It sticks like shit to a blanket even if I hit a bump.
