It will be really interesting to see hiw the Basque region reacts to this. I was in Barcelona during one of the last ETA bombings. “President” Rajoy certainly has his hands full.

As if Spain is going to let 20% of the GDP just make itself a Republic and cease to provide taxation. Polls indicate only a third of all Catalonians even want an independent state. I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

Only a third? Not even close. In 2014 a a poll was conducted in which 80% approved of succession. In 2015 selaratists took over the Catalan government. They’re saying 90% voted for independence today. I was in Barcelona a few years ago when over 2 million people turned out to protest Spanish rule. Spain definitely isn’t going to let go without a fight. Look at how long they fought the Basque people. It will be interesting to see what the Basque do as ETA just laid down arms about a year ago.

The 1st and 2nd series 2017 CEO polls show 37.3% and 34.7% respectively of all Catalonians polled opted for an independent Republic. Also, we can’t use the results from this poll, as the vast majority of people willing to risk personal safety are independence seekers.

I’ll be interested to see if incompetent Spanish leadership is targeted, and how their praetorians react. They are going to have a hard time using the “just following orders” cop out, some heads need to roll.
Also interested to see how the EU deals with this - by joining, you sign your life away, and Spain might not have much ability to simply try to exterminate the movement. EU courts should be meddling in this now, but they might not have the stones - Brussels and Strasbourg don’t seem to breed courage or justice.

Of the dozen or so polls conducted over the last five years, most indicated 40%+ support for independence with about two indicating less than that. I have a feeling it’s probably higher now. Scroll down to the polling section dor the dozen or so poll results.

It looks like most agree a referendum should be held, but even with the population edging on becoming an independent Republic, Spain ain’t gonna have it. I would rather try this in a country where people aren’t alive from the previous fascist regime.

The big, big obstacle an independent Catalonia would face is that in spite of what the Catalan government wants to believe, it won’t ever be accepted as a member of the EU. The reason? France.
Off the top of my head, areas of France with a clear, differentiated culture and language which would likely welcome a high degree of autonomous government are:
Britanny
Basque Country
Roussillon (or “Northern Catalonia”)
Corsica
France would veto any independent Catalonia as a member of EU and would
not
recognise it as a country, lest it gave these regions (and I am not even taking into account what used to be called DOM-TOMs) some encouragement to follow the same route. Bear also in mind that France is the cradle of the modern centralised state: regional self-rule or autonomous government are absolutely alien to their idea of what their nation is/should be.
Please note that Breton, Basque, Catalan and Corsican are not even co-official languages in France. That’s just an example of how, er, monolithic their system is.
In Italy they have enough problems already with those crackpots of the
Lega Nord
and their “Padania” to even entertain the concept.

Spain has a problem ... Catalanes know how much of the weight they are pulling and want more autonomy. They are going to get it one way or another.
