My best friend got on a plane this morning to fly to Portland, Oregon for bike mechanic school. Except...

Kinja'd!!!

He posted this upon arrival:

Kinja'd!!!

His boss bought the ticket, but I’m not letting all that blame slide. How do you manage to get on a plane without realizing you’re flying to the wrong side of the country?!?!

Well it’ll always be a good story. Anytime some one brings up a “stupid thing that happed while traveling” story he’ll have one to top it.

Oops.

I can see that happening if I was running late. Hand counter person your ticket, get boarding pass, run to gate... Watch the screen tracker as you’re flying in the wrong direction and eventually it’s too wrong and you start double checking things, and... Shit.

Working NYC law firm, bleary eyed, got on a flight they told me to get on to DC, fell asleep. If I’d woken up in Seattle, it would not have been my error. Best friend gets a pass here.

I am surprised there is such a thing as bike mechanics’school... I mean there’s like, what, 4 moving parts on a bike?

However, I am not in the least surprised that such a thing would be in Portland.

Fun fact: Portland, OR was named after Portland, ME as a result of a coin toss. The alternative was Boston.

Fun fact: I’ve never been to Portland, ME, but I’m certain it’s better than Portland, OR.

well, welding or brazing a bike frame is difficult. As is proper bike fitting. As is wheelbuilding. But also keeping track of the myriad of British, Japanese and Italian standard thread sizes, combined with the onslaught of recent bottom bracket ‘standards’.

I think it does warrant a formal training.

There was one sales guy at my work that went on a company-related trip.

When he arrived, he realized he forgot something critical.

He called someone at the office and said “I FORGOT MY PANTS!”

And then asked the fellow employee to have his pants shipped to him.

Of course he was referring to his dress pants.

But I still had this image in my head of him leaving his house with no pants on, just boxers. Then going to the airport and getting on the plane that way, then landing, getting off the plane and running around outside saying “I FORGOT MY PANTS!!! I FORGOT MY PANTS!!!”

Now the only thing I’m not sure of is which is more stupid... forgetting your pants or flying the wrong way...

It happens. I remember some years a girl was flying somewhere or other with the late Manx Airlines. She misheard the announcement and got on a flight for Minsk in Belarus. For reasons that are unclear nobody noticed that she had the wrong ticket and she ended up being detained on arrival, not having a visa.

I suppose you’ve got a point. Bikes have gotten pretty advanced, and if I bought a $10,000 mountain bike I’d probably want it to be serviced by a trained technician.

Ever see the episode of Portlandia where folks from P.Oregon vacation in P.Maine? It was pretty good.

I think there’s much less homeless in the Maine side, but a much better bookstore on the Oregon side.

Maine is pretty far out there for sure. Just driving somewhere for vacation takes a whole day to get into NY state. And then you only got to the east coast...again...

I had a coworker at another plant once fly into New Jersey to go to the Chrysler Plant in Newark.

With some buddies on a ski trip to Switzerland. We fire up the TomTom to go from Interlaken to Engleberg. Scroll down, select Engleberg, drive several hours to get to Engleberg in time for dinner. Arrive in Engleberg. WTF, we are in some dudes yard and can’t see a mountain. Double check the road sign and consult TomTom. Yes, we are in Engleberg. Investigate further by scrolling to the next page on the TomTom. Well shit, there are two Engleberg’s in Switzerland. Drive several more hours, arrive in Engleberg around 9:00, now time to find a hotel and some dinner.
