More on it tomorrow, but for now, here’s the Mustang that won the whole damn thing almost getting hit head-on by a stop sign runner.

To be fair, the guy was driving pretty aggressively, and the van should have been visible from that distance; maybe wait to pass until there are literally no other cars around?

Yeah, the Mustang was definitely partially to blame. Everyone really started going balls-out on the last leg, which this was.

I’m surprised they would put a passing zone at a cross road like that.

I can’t see whether or not the van driver made a complete stop, but obviously you were there and could tell.

Stop sign running aside though, this is a good reminder that even right-turners need to look both ways.

There’s an intersection in my area where this sort of thing almost happens quite a bit, but from a different angle. Imagine your situation above, but with the side-street traffic coming up from the right-hand side, and waiting to turn left instead of right.

What happens is that the lead car will be moving slowly, and the guy behind him starts looking for opportunities to pass. Meanwhile, the car waiting at the stop sign sees the slow car approaching, and decides that there’s enough time to go ahead and make that left turn before the slow car arrives. But by the time everyone decides to make their move, the slow car is directly in-between the left-turner and the passing car, blocking their ability to see one another until they’re about to have a head-on collision.

I was the driver of that car. I wish I would have known someone from Kinja was at the rally. I would have loved to talk to you.

A little info on the incident:
Neither my navigator or I could see the van when we started to make the pass. Had we, I would have never gone for it. Once in the left lane we saw the van approach the stop sign. Once it was clear that the van wasn’t going to stop at the sign I immediately began hard breaking and down shifting, with the momentary lock on the back right wheel. At the time we weren’t traveling at any crazy speed. The vehicle we were over taking was traveling below the 55mph speed limit if I recall. We weren’t doing anything crazy just because we were in a rally. The rally is designed such that speeding is not necessary. In fact it’s penalized.

In all honesty I don’t think there were anyone to ‘blame’ per se. The van wasn’t there when we started to pass, though they didn’t stop at the sign. Technically that’s running a stop sign, but I’m sure most everyone rolls right up to the edge of the highway when turning. I simply couldn’t tell if they were going to stop or not so I backed off immediately.

I would like to say that I attest our success in part to a Jalopnik bump! Put the logo on the car the night before!!!

First of all, glad this didn’t end badly. Secondly, congratulations on the win! My friend and I were driving the white Alfa Romeo that everyone was stuck behind on Stage 5. And yeah, y’all weren’t driving recklessly and that pass was perfectly legal.

As long as you’ve made an account, consider authorship on Oppositelock. It’s a neat little blog. But yeah, I wish I had known another Kinja user was on the rally! I go to school in Des Moines, not sure if you guys are local or not.

I’m from area as well! I thought that might be the Alfa in the video. I couldn’t tell for sure. I will say that it looked a heck of a lot closer in the video than it felt in person. It’s certainly interesting to see from that angle.
