Kinja'd!!!

I went grocery shopping today and every other item seemed to be pumpkin spice flavored. Soda, candy, donuts as well as all the crap shown above (and probably hundreds more). I forget who said it, but some wise person once stated that (paraphrased) pumpkin pie is the best thing made with pumpkin and it loses its appeal about three seconds after the first bite. This year it seems like this flavor is more prominent than any time in recent memory. Does anyone actually like the taste of this stuff, or is it just tradition/rite of fall?

On a positive note, there are lots of seasonal things that are caramel apple flavor, and while I would be OK without the caramel part, I am happy that there are more apple flavored things out there. The Jolly Rancher Green Apple flavored pop tarts were amazing, and I don’t even care for pop tarts. There were some caramel apple donuts at the market, and like all donuts I’ve encountered in the last several months, I managed to abstain despite my desire to eat the entire box.

As far as beer goes, very few places make a decent “pumpkin” beer. It tastes more like cinnamon and nutmeg than anything resembling pumpkin meat, or even pumpkin pie.

It does seem that when breweries try to add some sort of fruit flavor to their beer it’s either imperceptible or excessive. I had some peach wheat beer whilst on vacation and you knew from the first sip that it was PEACH flavored. The grape flavored Kolsch was quite tame by comparison, bordering on bland. Sierra Nevada’s Otra Vez, with grapefruit and cactus was actually pretty good, but then again, I really don’t know what cactus is supposed to taste like.

I hate very few things in life. Pumpkin spice is on my list.

Same here - I’m generally a pretty happy, tolerant and adaptable guy, but yeah, this stuff is on my very short enemies list.

Yes, too many fruit beers taste like someone dumped in half a pint of flavored corn syrup in a blonde ale or something.

Well, the peach stuff said it was all natural flavors, but it was so strong and intense, unlike any peach I’ve ever eaten including those I pulled from the tree myself in my family’s orchard. There is no way that level of concentrated flavor and fragrance was completely natural despite what the label claimed.

Key distinction: natural “flavor”

I’m thinking it was flavored-added as opposed to peach infused.

I found some pumpkin spice Gouda when I last went to the grocery store.

There is a handful of pumpkin things I like (pie, quickbread, certain beers, Top Pot [Seattle-based doughnut shop] doughnuts), but pumpkin/pumpkin spice is definitely overdone.
