Straight 6 pragmatism; 3 webers? Or EFI with 6 throttle bodies?

Something along the lines of this many carbs will run about $1200. Running equivalent injection, itb’s, would be about $1,700 with it all said and done, regardless of what L6 engine it is. So what’s more prudent or desireable? Adjusting and calibrating the carbs once In a while, or doing it once withe EFI and paying the extra money?

2nd test: let’s put this on an older car, say a BMW e9 or a 240z, or my current idea, 67 aluminum headed ford 200 mustang. Would injection cross a line with older platforms?

Nice things to think of at bedtime, eh?

If it was a daily, probably FI. ITBs gives you most of the good sound of sidedraft carbs, but better drivability and reliability. On an occasional driver, probably carbs. Really I’d probably do triple webers in general, because I like having to tinker with my cars, and the sound really is phenomenal.

Webbers sound better.

I really wonder what the sounds a weber set produce over that of the itb set.

I’d do Webers from a purely passion standpoint, EFI from a logical one. I’ve driven and tuned Webers on big six BMWs, and they’re magical. There’s a black E9 and a white E3 that just damn near moved me to tears on the throttle, glorious. By contrast, I had an E28 M5, and the noise the ITBs make is good but not quite as special, but they’ll always work, no screwing around regardless of temperature or altitude. Webers are good at staying in tune though. I had a 200ci Fairlane and got into looking at performance options, and a crossflow head with triple Webers was high on the want list. So yeah, go Webers.

A 67 Mustang? Take the 6 and hook it to the nearest boat. It’s an anchor.

That’s not helpful at all you dickbag!

OK. You’re right. The Aussies and Brasilians did good stuff with our garbage sixes.

So? What would you do?

I’d go with a turbo and FI.

Well now I have to find video of the same engine with webers and also ITB FI....this may be tricky

CLASSIC in lines now make an alu head for that inline, supports over 300hp n/a, 500+ boosted.

I’m in the process of converting an AMC 4.2L 258 from a TERRIBLE  Carter sort-of-electronically-controlled double barrel carb into a multipoint FI scenario. It’s supposed to net about 40-60hp and about 25% better fuel milage on a clean engine. I had the engine bored, decked, fitted with a bigger cam, oil pump, timing set and Edelbrock head. I’m using a new intake manifold and new set of AFE exhaust headers.

It’s going to be for an 88' AMC Eagle as a daily driver, summer camping car, and winter ski-hill wagon. Really want a dependable cold starting, altitude adapting 4WD wagon. So FI is the solution, no question. Mine will basically have a Jeep TJ/Cherokee setup with more bottom end torque. Original equipment made 110hp and 232 ft-lbs. New setup should be minimum 150, probably more like 160-170 and equivalent torque numbers. Maybe if it goes spectacularly well around the 200 mark. Just gotta swap the auto transmission for a stick once I know it’s working properly and then I can use that power a little more effectively.

If I had an old retro sporty car... dunno. I’m not a tinkerer. More a once-and-hopefully-done kinda personality. Maybe if it was ONLY switching from a single carb and manifold to multi-carb job, and had no other problems to work out I’d consider it... it does look and sound amazing. But you can get some pretty sweet power curves with programable FI setups, and with some of them can swap between a gas sipping program or tire melting program at the press of a button; so that’s a consideration too.

I see you are scared of the unbridled performance of the Holley single barrel. That’s what I have on my slant six and it certainly moves it forward.
