I struck out on the Vehicross yeah, but wait, what’s this?

Kinja'd!!!

Oh cool, a first gen Mazda 6, those are neat...

Kinja'd!!!

...okay so it’s a v6 wagon, that makes it even cooler but if you really want to impress me it needs to have...

Kinja'd!!!

...my god.

So it’s a 2004 v6 5 speed Mazda 6 wagon. That seems awesome to me, I’ve read good things, but surely one of you jokers has had one. Tell me things!

I think it’s got the same engine as my wife’s Sable: 3.0 Duratec. Great engine... tramission started slipping around 200k though.

You appear to be correct, it’s basically a VVT Duratec 3.0, which is pretty good. I’ve always heard good things about the Duratec Motors, so that’s good news...I’m also pleased it’s a timing chain, that always makes me happy.

I hope everything else under the hood isn’t the same as the Sable LS though... Seriously everything on that car broke on us.

Yeah watch out for oil leaks, specifically timing cover and the camshaft seal by the water pump. Didn’t see too many of these in my time as a mazda tech but timing covers are issues on pretty much every mazda with a Ford v6.

the Rust issues on the front shock towers, if you live in a rust prone area.

Mazda 6s are rarely as rusty as period Mazda 3s - the higher price point must’ve afforded better rust protection.

That said, my parents’ ‘05 automatic Mazda 6 wagon in a one-year-colour is starting to develop rust bubbles on the window surrounds.

I owned one. Well a sedan, not a wagon. On the whole I liked that car. Interior plastics were on the cheap side. Leather was fragile. Not a problem on the car from these pics.

If it’s been serviced, the engine should be fine. Pay attention to the clutch though. If it slips at all or the engine surges at freeways speeds, a new one is costly (lots of labor).

Oil leaks: the oil pan is easy for techs to cross thread. Happened to me, twice.

It never happened to me but I seem to remember that the top center led display with radio station and climate temp broke a lot.

Before you buy take a magnet to the quarter panel. Also check for rust on the strut towers. Brothers old Mazda 6 had bad strut tower rot.

I was thinking I’d rather have this car with the 2.3.
