Kinja'd!!!

The Ferguson P99 was a weird F1 car. Its first and only season was in 1961. It was the first All-wheel drive F1 car, it featured a front-engine and, according to Donut Media , featured “Mechanical ABS”

Ok, so that doesn’t make a ton of sense, and I think Donut was just trying to draw a close comparison (obviously ABS systems require wheel speed sensors, at the very least, and sensors require computers. I’m told computers were quite large in the 60's). The Ferguson Museum called it “Anti-skid technology” (which almost makes it sound like stability control), but I cannot find any other information about the braking system on this car, and god damnit, I’m curious now!

Do any of you fine Oppos know anything about this car, or shall we all chip in, buy one, and tear it down to find out how it works?

It’s an adaptation of the Dunlop Maxaret system designed for aircraft, and it is mechanical - it used a flywheel that was coupled to the wheels, but in a way that allowed the flywheel to outrun the wheels if wheel speed was lost too quickly - so it would’ve been calibrated based on expected braking speed. If that happened, a mechanism would inhibit braking.

Interesting. In the aerospace industry, anti-lock brakes have always been called “anti-skid”, so maybe there’s a connection there? In the early 60s, that is probably the only other place you would have found such a device. Maybe they just borrowed the name?

Here are a couple links showing (roughly) how it works in old airplanes:

The P99 used Dunlop Maxaret Brakes which were commonly used in aircraft applications. Wikipedia on how the Maxaret system worked: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxaret

You are on to it. The P99 used Dunlop’s Maxaret system which was commonly used in aircraft.

Someone call my dad and tell him he was wrong about me all along! I’m not useless!

What a cool system! Thanks for clearing that up for me :)
