So, you’re a Kinja developer?

I’d let it go live and let the users sort it out.

Calling my dad. One of the few people I know who has a landline -and does NOT have call waiting. Really.

Oh, me too - my parents are the same. At least one of them has a cell phone...

Considering how balky Kinja has been lately with comments, this may still be an upgrade.

My dad does have a cell phone. And about 10% of the time, it’s turned on.

My parents just got a second cell phone so both my mom and Dad have one now. They have fiber internet and a new iMac. They stream Netflix and Amazon on a Fire TV attached to a giant LCD TV. And they still have the damn land line. The mind boggles.

So... I’ve quietly been working on a printed Opposite Lock The Magazine in the background as a way to get familiar with MS Publisher. I haven’t mentioned it because it will probably never actually get done. If I somehow pull it off I plan to mail them out to everyone. Probably would get there faster than Kinja comments.

My parents have cell phones. But they don’t turn them on, even when they are traveling. In a certain way, I envy them. I’ve grown paranoid about not being able to contact somebody instantly. When I was a kid, I’d be off riding my bike for hours and my parents would have no idea where I went. Now, I won’t let my boys leave without a cell phone that I can track. What happened?

Yeah, it is really weird, isn’t it? I’m starting to miss those days more and more. The funny thing is, when I started driving, I was driving 20 year old cars (carburetors, etc.) with no cell phone (they didn’t exist), all over the place - and never really thought twice about it. I didn’t have many breakdowns, really, but I had a few - and I couldn’t tell you how I dealt with it, but I did, without any major issues.

Confession - one of the things I like about driving, especially on a trip, is having a perfectly good excuse to ignore my cell phone. Particularly in the convertible with the top down. The car doesn’t have Bluetooth, and the wind noise make it impossible to talk anyways. The phone is there, but I’m *almost* off the grid.

Even better was a trip to Argentina a few years ago - wonderful country, but their internet speeds are mediocre in BA, lousy in Mendoza, and virtually non-existent in Patagonia. No one could reach us - it was awesome!!

We got our very first cell phone when my old 88 VW Fox swallowed its catalytic converter and I was stuck on the side of the road for 4 hours. It was a huge brick of a thing, and my wife and I would have to decide who got to take it. I think I liked phones better when they were just phones. There’s some serious psychology going on with these smartphones. They play into the basic human nature of “I want it now!” and people just can’t put them down. Standing in line at the grocery store, I reach for my pocket. Sitting at a light, I reach for the phone. I often feel smugly superior to other mindless phone automatons when I can resist the urge to check Oppo one more time.
