I’m proud to say I’ve worked for Elon at both SpaceX and Tesla, even though he has no idea who I am or what is was I did for him. I’m not really anybody’s fanboy but the guy thinks with the enthusiasm of a 12 year old while juggling two wildly improbable companies at the same time with a lot of success. It reminds you to not fuck up while working for him too. I can’t see the above video ever working for thousands of reasons — most folks aren’t as fit as astronauts being the main one. However I can seem him noodling on that solution until he finds a problem it actually solves and then making a ton of money off of it.

(If you’re reading this Elon: That Dragon 9 engine overboost that automatically aborted the launch — nobody likes an aborted launch aside from the guy who helped keep the rocket from blowing up and he’s gotta pretend he’s bummed too now. Awkward time for a fist pump.)

I’ve thought about this idea for a long time, and if you look through aerospace texts of the past you’ll find a lot of similar ideas - super fast aircraft and/or rocket that flies suborbital to connect city pairs in minutes.

From the aircraft and/or rocket side it’s not particularly complicated. SpaceX is deep into this tech with their ability to land a rocket without parachutes, but they are still pretty far away from doing so safely enough for passengers. The question that’s never really been answered by any of these ideas is passenger comfort. While there will be some segment of the population that wants to play astronaut, nothing about this journey will be comfortable with current technology. During the launch you’ll likely sustain upwards of 3 g’s, and during the cruise and re-entry you’ll spend a not insignificant amount of time in free fall then some additional G loading on the landing burn.

Sure, it’ll be amazing to go NY to Shanghai in less than an hour, but there’s no way the amount of people that would be willing to endure the physical discomfort and pay what will be a very expensive ticket would be enough to sustain a business.

Cargo, however, is a different story...I still think there’s a market there, but I don’t think it’s big enough to create a business today.

Is anyone thinking about the noise? Launching a rocket within sight of a major metropolitan area is sure to generate complaints.
