Kinja'd!!!

Installed the 4th Gen Apple TV and started to load it up with channels so that I can watch anything on my miniscule cable plan. Keep in mind that they have an exclusive agreement with Roku and so provide apps for that platform. When I try to sign on to various subscribed channels via the cable company login using the Apple TV I’m informed that they’re not set up to work on this platform yet. Gee, thanks. No HBO, no HGTV, etc. I can do mirroring via my phone, but that ties up the phone, kind of defeating the purpose of having this separate, standalone box.

Oh, and the bill went up again, this time in the guise of ‘franchise fees’, whatever the hell those are (I’ve been sick and haven’t had the energy to look this up but I know there’s big Wikipedia page).

Did you have this problem with your last gen box?

Before I cut the cable a while back, I’d call Time Warner every 6 months or so (when the price went up) and ask them to reconfigure my package. Usually resulted in 40 bucks a month of savings. If you’re getting shit, you should try it.

Same problem with the 3rd generation Apple TV, but I only had that for about three days before it was shipped off to my folks. Spectrum doesn’t seem to be in any great hurry to support these apps, promising to get around to proper support in 2017 or 2018. I guess they’re too busy with their borderline monopoly mergers to worry about this. Some of the merger partners, Bright House and Time Warner, have support, but the former Charter Cable doesn’t.

Oh, and I can’t add any more channels to my streaming TV without springing for a full cable TV subscription. I’ll have to take another look at Sony’s offering as they seemed to have just about every channel I wanted in their lowest tier, although I’m hesitant to spend another $40/month for TV.

That blows. The only reason we still buy tv is so the wife can see all her college football.
