Seriously. They maximize utility, minimize time, and you’re never worried about rust from a bracket, or a cheap aftermarket piece breaking under load. Why don’t manufacturers do this anymore? Other than the almighty dollar...

Aesthetics, mostly.

Yeah, I don’t get it, either. Maybe they’re too utilitarian looking. People don’t like their trucks looking useful. The ones on my old Chevy LUV were so damn handy. I used to load that thing up.

Amen! There’s been numerous times where I’ve been underwhelmed with the number of places to hook on ratchet straps on several different trucks.

Trucks nowadays are less about utility and more about style.

Aerodynamics might be a factor, too - nowhere near the primary one, but a factor nonetheless.

In any case, pickups designed for the US market, for whatever reason, have never had tie-down rails as part of the bed like that, and it’s always designs intended for other markets where I see that (sometimes American-market designs are modified to add them, sometimes foreign-market designs are modified to remove them).

AFAIK, most of the trucks with them in the US market are 70s/80s Japanese models, before the Japanese automakers figured out how to customize per-market.

Every truck I’ve had, I’ve put eye bolts into for this reason.

I’ve often wondered why trucks no longer have practical tie-down points. Style? Liability? Cost? Whatever the reason, it’s disappointing.

I’d say going that route would be cheaper than the rail system that trucks have now. The exterior hooks would be useless with a cap or tonneau, though.

As I learned from my dad they’re completely unnecessary. Just mount some boards on the side of the truck and screw some eyelets into them!

Like this. But more getto.

No no, you don’t understand. They want to look like the type of “man” that needs a truck to do manly thing while actually being the type of man that doesn’t even really put stuff in the bed, tow, or need anything a base Honda Civic wouldn’t offer.

who need practicality anyway?
On 620's, many people remove them for style.
