I love the Dark Souls series, but those games will never apologize or change for putting you at a disadvantage. Sometimes I think pausing might be nice, but it’s Dark Souls, and I have other Steam games I can enjoy if I hated it that much.

Way back in the early 90s some mates and I used to play a fleet naval warfare game called Harpoon, whose schtick was that it ran in real time. So a game would last days, and if a destroyer found your submarine at 3am, your PC would scream at you and you’d have to wake up and deal with it. And if it happened while you were off at class, tough shit you just lost a submarine.
I think there actually was a way to pause it, or to speed it up if it got boring, but among my circle that was regarded as cheating: having it f*ck up your life was part of the masochistic attraction.
