SPOILER: I like it! It is so different from home that even the smallest details are fascinating. However, I could never live here.
What would this place do to my beautiful Toyotas?
The Mississippi is beautiful. The people here are very nice, but they all talk down about the region, and act like the river is ugly. It is kind of weird.
This is from an observation point in Rock Island, looking back at Davenport across the river. I hung out here for a while.
Rock Island’s downtown seems to be struggling a little, but it has this cool art and sstatues of Jake and Elwood (who were from Rock Island in the movie).
I spent the day exploring, and I had a surprisingly good day and am glad I got out and about. Last time I was here, I really did not have much chance to explore. I started at a vintage car dealership looking at beautifully restored old cars for sale. I did not buy anything.
I also checked out Rock Island Arsenal, which required me to clear a criminal history check before I could get a visitor pass. You know, being an active military facility, they are concerned with security. I visited the National Cemetery, which was very moving, the Memorial Garden, and the museum. Man, that is a lot of weapons.
I had a fun day. I would not schedule my next vacation here, but there are worse places to be stuck on business, like Bakersfield.
If you live here, be proud, you live in a really nice place. I think Davenport is my favorite, but I still can’t figure out why there are 2 Autograph Collection hotels within 5 blocks of each other here.
