Kinja'd!!!

Is it Tool Time yet? I don’t think so, Tim...

My brother’s new acquisition had been sitting for an estimated 12 years, so before making any repairs, we decided to start with a good pre-cleaning.

The interior had its share of dust & debris begging to be cleaned up. I’m sure that there was some light mold in that dust, too. So to improve the work environment inside the car, we vacuumed the carpet and wiped down the other surfaces.

Kinja'd!!!

My brother also applied some silicone to the door seals, and leather conditioner to the upholstery. It soaked right in, and will surely need another treatment.

Kinja'd!!!

We then washed the exterior of the car, scrubbing away the accumulated grime. The body’s got some rough spots, but this preliminary bath made a startling difference in the car’s appearance from when we found it.

Kinja'd!!!

Despite the faded paint on top, the sides shone liked they hadn’t in over a decade.

Kinja'd!!!

After the body was clean, we picked out some random leaves, nuts, and bits of hood insulation that was under the intake runners, and proceeded to degrease the engine bay. After rinsing it off, I hit it with my leaf blower to accelerate the drying process.

Kinja'd!!!

Once the car was clean both inside and out, we opened up all the doors and let the sun (and what little breeze there was) do the rest on this 90°(F)+ day. Before hooking up a battery, we wanted to let the engine compartment finish drying out, and let the cabin air out too.

It’ll need a more thorough cleaning later on, but at least it’s not so bad to work on now.

Ok, now we can start wrenching!

Dude, for being a $600 project, that thing looks like it’s in remarkably good shape. Y’all hit the jackpot with that thing.

Hmm seems Kinja ate my previous comment...Anyway, for a $600 project, this thing looks to be in remarkably good shape. Unless there are some really serious mechanical or electrical gremlins hiding in there, y’all got a helluva deal!

Thanks! Yeah, we know for sure that the brakes will need an overhaul, but we’re going to try to save those for last, since they should be pretty straightforward. Gotta focus on the electrical system and engine first.

Kinja’s really acting up for me today too. I can see your other reply through my notification log, but I don’t know if there’s more than one paragraph, and the permalink won’t load for me to respond to it. I’m having the same problem with another notification I got from shop-teacher, and with a comment I made on another post. Aargh...

After watching somebody else’s difficulty with getting the K Jetronic working again, I suggest getting the fuel system completely reconditioned before turning the key. Might as well keep the bad gas away from sensitive parts. I think the other Saab 900 mentioned here had to have the distributor head replaced to get it to run.....

This one’s LH Jetronic. I’m not entirely sure what the difference is, but the car’s been started a couple of times on ether already. We’re going to stop doing that now, while we dig further into the fuel system.

You inspired me some. I just acquired my dream Swedish car... a white 91 9000 turbo with 5 speed for $500. 130000 miles. got it from the original owner. the catch is the PO’s wife crunched the drivers fender and headlight and shifted the bumper to the left.

Engine sounds great but slowwwww. Not sure if turbo works. The boost gauge doesn’t work. Gonna have fun tracing vacuum lines and testing the turbo but hoping it will clean up ok.

Good luck on your continued project!
