What do when buying a CPO car?

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve only bought old cars, so I took them to shop close buy to get inspected. Do you do anything before buying a car that comes with extra warranty and passed an “uncompromising 160-point inspection” ???

The car in question will have 88k miles of drivetrain warranty and 36k miles of everything else warranty from the day I get it. Its only a year old. So would just taking it for a test drive suffice?

“What do”

I can wonder no longer. Why do people use this phrase? Is it just a type or a quicker way of saying “what to do”, or this actually a thing? Lol.

As for your question, I think just the test drive would suffice. Since you are covered for anything that goes wrong for next 36k to 88k miles depending on what it is.

I’ve seen a lot of advice that says you should still get an independent inspection on a CPO car, but if you’ve got warranty protection for many miles into the future, you’re probably pretty safe. Maybe ask them to put it up on a rack so you can take a good look underneath?

Congrats on the potential sweet, sweet Miata coming to a driveway near you!

I legitimately don’t know why I just typed it that, but it happened. I am quite lazy and I guess it was less to type that way.

Put it on a rack is a good idea. It has been on their lot for 3 months so thats a little worrying. But if it all looks good I cant see what the problem could be (it has a clean carfax).

TD is enough for me. I only worry about a PPI on a car that is potentially super expensive to service (Anything European with 8 or more cylinders). Or a car where I don’t plan to purchase an aftermarket warranty with the sale.

On a year old Mazda with just a few miles, TD is all you need.

Generally a dealership isn’t going to let you take a car off their lot for an independent inspection.

While the car is only a year old, I would definitely ask for a Carfax report, records of any work they put into the car, and for them to put it up in the air for you to look at it from underneath.

Also do a thorough check for any body work, like checking the seams under the hood, peeking underneath the trunk lining, etc.

With that low of miles I’d say a test drive, then look under hood and under car on a lift. With that many miles warranty you’re pretty safe.

Caveat here is that I haven’t bought a used car in a million years, or a CPO car ever, but I’m looking to do this next year too, so I’m curious about responses, but:

I think it depends on how good the warranty is - I know it varies by manufacturer a bit, so I’d do some research on what Mazda’s is like. Other than CarMax (which is good because Doug says so), I wouldn’t trust anything other than a manufacturer’s warranty at all.

But, if Mazda (or CarMax, whatever you’re looking at) has a good, solid warranty, I think I’d be OK with a test drive only - and let the warranty pay for anything that pops up later. That said, though, a 3rd party inspection could save you some trips to the dealer, arranging a loaner (does the warranty cover that??), etc. - - and if you’re a belt and suspenders type of person, you might want to spend the $ and get it.

If it has a clean carfax and a warranty, don’t sweat it.

It’s a 1 year old car...there is nothing wrong with it. And this is if it’s a private sale. This is CPO. Just buy it and drive it.

Yeah, you’re probably good. Maybe take a friend, give everything a good once-over outside, inside, in the engine bay and underneath.

I bought my M3 site unseen, with no third party inspection over the phone. It still had a year left on the warranty so I figured any issues would be covered. As long as the warranty would cover any issues, I wouldn’t worry too much about an inspection.

Maybe I’ve been lucky, but I haven’t had a car inspected before I bought it and have been fine.

I just bought my first ever used car. It was CPO from Kia. I treated it like a new car because it was from the Kia dealer where it began its life, and they gave me its entire service history. If it’s already got factory warranty on it, I figured no reason to get it inspected on my own dime.

It comes with an “auto check” but I was going to run a carfax tonight since I have a couple left anyways.

Ha, its halfway across the country, so no friend. But yea I’ll ask for them to lift it up. I’m mechanically inclined enough to see if something big is out of place.

I still suggest a third party inspection. I’ve seen cars wrecked and poorly rebuilt under 1000 miles, then have that damage and shoddy work missed during an inspection. Sometimes used car managers will do wheel swaps after the inspection and certification so the certified car ends up with the wrong [sized] wheels and worn tires. All maintenance should be up to date and all wear items should have quite a bit of life left, but sometimes things are missed, or an unscrupulous manager will find ways not to do required items.

It’s probably fine. But no one is perfect, and a lot of used-car techs are inexperienced or less skilled. Not that they’re bad necessarily, but they’re more likely to miss things.

Its a Mazda CPO from their dealer. I should ask about the warranty though, I’ve never had one!

I presume that the original new car warranty still applies for a while, right? That’ll be rock solid. For the remainder of the CPO period, I’d ask them, and do some research on line, to see how Mazda’s rates. I have no idea, but I would hope it’s fairly decent—

Haha! Exactly that. I wouldn’t do much inspecting for a 3 year old CPO, much less a 1 year old CPO. That’s practically brand new, someone just decided to eat $5k of depreciation to experience that Miata goodness with the new car smell.

My cpo buys have been just test drive and done, but there is always a risk. An inspection is 100-150, so relatively small money that might actually turn up something that can be used to bargain with.

For my CPO beetle I didn’t do a PPI. They let me hook up an obdii scanner and I had a checklist of other things to look for and they had service records of what they did to get it ready for sale and from dealer that had serviced it.

Most dealers have Carfax subscriptions. Might as well get them to run it for you. It sets up a pattern of them doing something you ask them to do.

Listen to Steve Lehto’s podcast about CPO. CPO is just a fancy marketing term for a bit more warranty. It comes with no additional rights or guarantees. You’re still buying a used car as-is. Get it inspected. If the dealership won’t let you get it inspected, run far and run fast.

I’ve purchased two CPO cars. I didn’t do that when I bought either of them. They both turned out to be total pieces of shit. I sold them both at a loss, one after 3-1/2 months, and one after 11 months. Don’t end up like me.

Yes. You get the car checked out just like any other used car. Those “ uncompromising 160-point inspections” are pure bullshit.

Yea original warranty is 36k miles for everything and 60k powertrain, the CPO pushes it out to 48k everything and 100k powertrain.

Learning from others mistakes is a good thing to do. I should get it checked out.

I know CPO means no additional guarantees, but as someone thats never had a warranty, an additional 40k miles sounds nice.

I highly recommend learning from my mistakes :)

Don’t get me wrong, CPO is great, and warranties are awesome. It just doesn’t mean what a lot of people think it means. Get it inspected, and you can also ask to see the warranty history of the vehicle. See if you find any red flags there.

Just so you’re well informed, but I’m thinking you already know this, in most states the lemon law does not cover you unless you’re the original owner of the car, no matter how new the vehicle is. The one I only owned for 3-1/2 months was only 14 months old, with 5200 miles on it. It spend 31 days out of service in that 3-1/2 months. Didn’t matter. All I could to was either put up with an unreliable car, or sell it at a loss. I ain’t got no time for that jibba-jabba!
