Sure, it’s not interesting but a) it’s exactly the sort of sensible car I should be driving, b) I’ve already had 3 interesting cars by the age of 19, and I still have the Alfa, so I can do a bit of boring, c) it’s not horrendously slow and also looks like it could be comfortable, perfect for a college kid who makes semi-regular road trips. Plus you can’t tell it’s a hybrid until you get to a gas pump.

Hondas hybrid batteries are notoriously bad. 50,000 miles between needing batteries is not uncommon. For reference Toyotas go about double before it’s even a thought, and will go triple or quadruple before it’s a problem.

New it would hit 60mph in under 7 seconds. Not too shabby. The 600 mile cruising range is damn fine as well.

Except this is a V6 Hybrid and more for giving good performance with slightly better mileage, and not the typical hybrid 40-something mpg.

I’ve always wanted one of these—if anything, just to find out how Honda thought a giant V6 with a vaccuum cleaner motor strapped to it would somehow satisfy the Prius crowd. Anyways, it may not be as reliable as you’d expect with the ageing battery and some level of oil consumption because it’s a first-gen VCM engine. Also, at that mileage you’re looking at a 100k service in the future if not sooner because of its age.

You’re in Nebraska right? You should buy this https://omaha.craigslist.org/cto/d/1981-mercedes-benz-300-td/6318035204.html IDK wtf is going on with that rear suspension though.

Or this. https://grandisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/1971-mercedes-220d-diesel/6251978459.html If I wasn’t 1k miles away I would be showing up with cash for that.

I had a 1996 Accord (5-speed) in college and it was wonderful. I took it across the country, drove it like a rally car, put chains on it chasing powder in Colorado, slept in it... it had 120k when I got it, over 200k when I sold it, and in that stretch I put an exhaust on it (broke off hitting ice chunk on the highway in the dark), and a starter (easy DIY). Hell, I still had it for 2 years after I met my wife, sold it to a friend, then bought it back from him later, sold it again...

I’d buy another one in a second. Although I have to admit mine was at least a nice dark green color.

They’re super under stressed so they last many many miles. I’ve driven a 73 220d which made 69hp when new and it really wasn’t that bad. It’s great for around town. I just didn’t get it because I would have had to drive it 1.5hrs down a highway with traffic flowing at 75-80mph. And the dude put air springs in it, but there was a leak in the system. And the battery kept dying beause the alternator is like a 30a unit and the two air compressors kept turning on because of the leak. And then the muffler fell off. It was a good time though.

This is exactly why to buy a hybrid/fuel efficient car. I welcome all electric, alternative fuel and otherwise efficient cars. Because the more of them that are out there, the longer we can have our gasoline/diesel burning enthusiast cars.

My parents had one of these for a few years. They bought it in 2009ish as a 2007 as a lease return with less than 20k on it and traded in a couple of years later with just over 60k on the clock (for a new 2011 Accord Coupe). I lived in town at the time, so I maintained and drove it on a fairly regular basis. Beyond being Mom’s car, it was used for very regular 300 mile trips to the lake and 3 or 4 long road trips.

The Bad:

Fuel mileage wasn’t nearly as good in real use as the EPA numbers would lead you to think. It did okay around town, but it never even came close to the EPA number on the highway, and it was really sensitive to the terrain, wind and load. Long interstate drives at reasonable speeds in the low 80's with any real terrain or wind and 2 or 3 passengers and luggage would tank the MPG’s to the mid 20's. Even ideal conditions on highway drives with more level terrain or calm days and with only one or two people without luggage, it would very rarely exceed 31 or 32 mpg. Around town, it would do 30mpg if you kept your foot out of it. In real world use, it generally got worse fuel mileage than an four cylinder accord. Also, the hybrid sacrifices a lot of trunk space compared to the non-hybrid accords of the generation.

In terms of reliability, theirs was generally fine, but it was also under warranty until the last few months they owned it. It did have a CEL come on at about 58k, that resulted in the dealer putting on a new set of catalytic converters and a controller for the hybrid system. That would’ve been an $1700 repair had it occurred a few thousand miles later.

In terms of driving dynamics, they came with a really soft suspension and tall, soft-sidewall tires. I think they were sprung softer than even the four cylinder accords. Despite lot of power, the car really didn’t like to be driven much faster than about 90, as it would start to wallow with bumps and undulations in the road surface. It was completely uninteresting to drive around a corner or at speed.

The Good:

With a sub seven second 0-60 time, they were quick. So long as they didn’t involve a corner, highway on ramps were fun with car. The IMA gave you instant torque off the line. In general, the accord of that generation was a fine car, and I think the hybrids all came pretty much loaded with heated leather seats, all the accessories and a good sound system.

Our Verdict:

It was an interesting novelty, but a non-hybrid accord of the era was a much better car. A four cylinder would be a much better economy option in a real world use, and an EX-L V6 would’ve been a vastly superior car that wouldn’t have actually given up much fuel economy.

As everyone else has said, run away from Honda hybrids.

If I wanted a less boring (than a Beige Camry™ anyway) midsize hybrid for about that price, I wouldn’t be surprised if you could get a decent early Fusion Hybrid (2010-2012) in that ballpark...

Or, if you wanted to get a bit stupid, I’ve seen cheap GS 450hs...

I think the concerns with this Accord Hybrid are also relating to maintenance costs, on the transmission and hybrid system. Also if I recall correctly I think you can’t flip down the back seat.
