Granted, I’ve been saying this for years but it’s true now that my wife is going to be starting her apprenticeship in funeral service, embalming, and cremation. She wants to spend between $4000-5000 and get a little pickup truck that will be reliable and relatively fuel efficient for me, so she can drive Meepster.

I have bad ideas - not Torch-level bad ideas - about doing something like this:

Kinja'd!!!

Which, with an older NPR or Fuso can be made for under $5k. Take-off beds are all over around here too because there are a few utility-body companies in the Charlotte area.

Problem with a Kei-truck is that it’s about the size of the John Deere Gator that stays in the barn, and I have interstate driving every day.

I think you should engineer a Smart Train - drive by wire on all 3 Smarts, with your cars hooked together by tow-bars. Drive from the front car and tow the camper behind...

That’s like a combined tow capacity of about 4,000 pounds! xD

I think those things are worth that much (old fiberglass campers are usually worth half that) because the U-Haul (yes, that U-Haul) campers are exceedingly rare...and very popular among fans of U-Haul.

As someone who has spent far more time in cab over trucks and buses than I could ever want to, they are absolutely awful. Not a lot of resources are put into sealing the doghouse cover so it lets cold air in during the winter and heat from the engine in during the summer. Also, super loud and poorly sound insulated. But for the record, you can totally fit a LQ4 smallblock and A1000 or 6L80 in one with ease.

I’d want to go for extreme light weight and good aero if I were doing a Smart camper, myself.

I’m thinking aluminum frame teardrop, with a full-size bed, rather than the more typical queen.

Always a good route to take! My experience with towing non-aerodynamic and heavy trailers is pretty positive. Fuel economy drops to about 33 mpg and you can definitely feel the wind pushing down on the trailer. Though perhaps ironically, that wind effect actually helps the car stay straight in crosswinds.

Most American smart owners seem to go the motorcycle pop-up tent camper route. A Timeout doesn’t weigh a whole lot at about 600 pounds.

I’ve also seen teardrops like the Little Guy also be a favourite within the smart community too. However, for how small they are they also weigh a lot at about 900 pounds. A fiberglass camper from the 90s or the 80s only weighs 200-300 pounds more while offering tons more space.

There’s only 1 truly lightweight fiberglass camper in production today in America (Scamp 13), though it does cost a pretty penny and the best options weigh it down quite a bit.

I think something like this would be perfect behind a Smart.

Is that mod so a coffin will fit in the back?

How long is that bed? That looks like it’s bigger than 8ft. Maybe they grafted a section cut from a second bed to stretch it.

I’ve had this same thought but already have a truck and the wife doesn’t understand building a frankentruck and selling my perfectly fine “professionally built” truck.
