Noise is there when car is running or in on position. Checked steering on rack, doesn’t feel loose or anything. No driveabilty concern so far. What could this be?

It’s sounds like an EPS problem for sure. BMW uses aluminum bolts to secure the motor to the rack and they can corrode. That can lead to a lot of problems, but one is that the drive gear of the motor doesn’t make great contact with the worm gear on the rack and it will start to make noises.

Sounds also like a dry rubber bushing rubbing somewhere. I’m not familiar with the system on that car, but you could look at the diagrams on realoem.com and see what you can find?

Sounds about right for a 5-year old car driven through salty winters. I’ll get that checked out... thanks.

But supposedly if it’s bushing, it would rub even if there’s no power?

Yeah I found this video of what happens when it gets really bad:

Could be something else, but should be easy for a tech to crawl under there and see if it is the bolts. From what I saw in one forum it isn’t all that expensive of a fix if you can get to it before the whole motor needs replacing.

Oh, I didn’t catch that it went away with power off. HMMMM
