I want to feed the rug to said previous owner. The nice oak hardwood is going to have to come up. Unfortunately the hardwood goes through the living room and into the dining room. The dining room and living room are in ok shape but the damage does go into the living room slightly.

that’s where they discovered the bodies.

But can’t you just sand it down and re varnish?

i dont think so, it looks like it does deep into the wood. I think parts of the wood have started to rot

sand it and see, you got nothing to loose if you wanted to change it anyways.

If no rot but still stained you can always stain it a darker colour.

Any way you could just take out the hall and a little bit in the living room and make it look like a feature? Like by running the boards the other direction? And maybe with a slightly different finish? You’ll never end up with them matching anyway without pulling the whole thing up.

Behold a (very) quick and dirty sketch of what I’m thinking:

So you’re sure it’s bad enough that it has to come out? Can’t be refinished?

My BIL had some of this, they also added on to their house when they bought it. They had a contractor who was able to find some similar flooring and match it up perfectly to the old stuff, you couldn’t even tell.

Definitely have a professional come look at it before you start ripping it out! You might have to stain it darker than you were thinking, but it could still be saved.

Sand it and dark espresso stain should do the trick, then varnish the shit out of it to seal it up. It’s got patina

That’s how the carpet was in our house. No hardwood underneath tho so I got to start from scratch. It was beyond nasty and we knew it was dog urin.

“Beautiful hardwoods underneath”

Yeah, I could have told you they looked like that, normally people don’t cover up hardwoods for no good reason. The rot is surprising though.

Man, that sucks. Same exact thing happened to us. We we’re lucky in that we had a month overlap between moving and were able to have them refinished. Shitty sellers are shitty

I was going to recommend wood bleach which is an acid that’s pretty good at lightening wood. But if it’s beginning to rot, there’s no option but replacement.

If that’s the front door it could have been beautiful hardwood when they put the carpet down. This is why you do not carpet entryways.

If it’s solid wood, you might be able to flip it. If it’s laminate, that idea is out the window. The tongue won’t be on the wrong side if you flip it end over end.

I don’t have any pics, but my father in law’s floor looked much worse, and we were able to sand and refinish it. Worst case, you’re out a sander rental. Best case, you’ve saved a bunch of money/time not ripping out the current floor.

Eh, it was the fad in the 60s for carpet. My house had beautiful hardwoods covered by carpet for no reason beyond it was the cool thing to do.

Unless they want to avoid the work of getting the floors back into decent shape. The previous owners of my house took the carpet up, but then never had them redone. And it showed. A week of work and the professional floor guy had them looking amazing again.

Ugh, that looks like water damage. Carpet pad probably held moisture and trashed the floor over time, I’m sure it was totally fine when the carpet was first laid.

Same thing happened to all the original parquet floors on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, wall to wall carpet laid in the ‘70s, and they pulled it up in the past few years expecting they could refinish, only to find it all shot. In that case, some of the woods used originally are either endangered or close to extinct.
