With a lap time of 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds the real news is that Porsche went full-Porsche on this one, kin. They did this lap in front of a Notary. They notorized their laptime. The 911 GT2 RS is literally notorious for this laptime! Such a Porsche move and I love it! I said sub-7 Minute Laps would become the norm and I totally called that the GT2 RS would land in high 6:40s. Stupid luck, but I got a lot of stupid so I catch a lot of luck.
Now we eagerly await the US-spec Bürgurking laptime.

Still slower than an electric car though. The NIO EP9 did 6 minutes and 45.9 seconds. I also think that Jaguar and BMW are going to release all-electric hyperhandling track cars by 2020. Just sayin’.

And now the scrutiny begins. What compound is it on, what’s their aero setup, what’s their transmission programming, anything on the tester that’s not on the options list, telemetry matching the footage...
I mean, another caveat is that the 918 record was set with a weaker build, so an actual Weissach-equipped customer car can go for maybe 1 or 2 below the 991 GT2RS. Regardless, awesome.
Lovely god I am simply amazed with this division right now. Ultracar is smashing, but supercar is just as stacked.

It looks longer and lower too. The new GT2RS is a beast but looks too much like the GT3RS to me.

Love it. Very impressive that this driver put this lap down with less than ideal lighting (sun is his eyes at times). Guess it was worth it for the cool, thick early morning air!

Lars Kern (30) from Germany and Nick Tandy (32) from the UK broke the previous record for road-approved sports cars (6 minutes, 52.01 seconds) in their first attempt and subsequently finished five laps in under 6 minutes, 50 seconds.....achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers.

It was Lars Kern, a Porsche test driver by trade with a passion for racing, who ultimately set the final record time. Kern regularly competes in the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring and knows the Nordschleife inside out. The subsequent record lap began at 7:11 pm and finished 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds later in ideal outdoor conditions.

Edit: the clock says 19:11, so it was actually “Sun set at the ‘Ring”
Makes sense as the track would be warmer/dryer than it would be in the AM.
