Kinja'd!!!

Tomorrow I’m looking at my first personal cell phone plan in 6 years.

I’ve been using my employer-provided phone for everything during that time. Most people at my company do, we pay a little, our company pays the majority. That worked fine until my last promotion, but now I’m getting calls and texts from customers at 7am on Satudays, voicemails 7pm on Fridays, and emails at 4am on Sundays. Basically, I don’t want to think about work when I’m not working anymore... More than I already do, that is.

Anyway, my wife is going to be getting the iPhone 7 Plus to replace her iPhone 5. As for me, I’m not sure. I recently replaced my work S6 with an S7, I can’t say I’m in love with it, but after seeing what the Galaxy Note8 cost... Maybe I can get over it.

So, which of the phones Verizon offers would you recommend?

If you want a smart phone, but don’t want to pay for a fancy smart phone. Just get a Galaxy J7 like me.

Although tbh it’s more like that FWD BMW 1 series they sell in China or whatever.

A Moto Z Play makes phone calls and has an off button. Bugger all bloatware too. Camera not that flash though.

I bought an off-contract, unlocked LG G5. It was overhyped when new, but I like it a lot. I’m on a GSM carrier, but here’s a factory refurb CDMA version:

edit: I guess I’d say the G6, if you wanna stick with something you can roll into your contract.

Lexus? Any phone that doesn’t catch on fire. And I love my 6S Plus. 7 has no headphone jack. And get a thick waterproof case - phone feels more manly.

On Verizon keep in mind that you get dinged to like $30 on an “Upgrade Fee” if you don’t bring your own phone. For your new line that won’t matter. But if your wife already has Verizon and is upgrading you can save that fee by buying an unlocked iPhone direct from Apple and just swapping SIM cards. Just did that for my wife’s iPhone 6 to 8 upgrade. I’m an iPhone guy so I’ll let the others chime in on that they think you should get because I have no real knowledge of current Android phones at all.

Don’t buy a phone from Verizon. Buy an unlocked phone. Here’s my handy-dandy list of unlocked phones that singles out Verizon compatibility and I’ve been steadily updating for no particularly good reason.

If you want something that doesn’t have super high end specs but is just a good solid phone, look at the Moto G5 series.

If you want higher specs and can put up with potentially buggy software, there’s the LG G5 and V20.

If you want a pure Google phone, get the Nexus 6P.

If you want a bit of a wildcard, get the ZTE Axon 7.

I’d get an iPhone. Let’s be real: I’m a computer nerd, I work with them day-in and day-out. Although I would have zero difficulty with an Android phone (and might find some additional uses for it because they’re possible), I have been a long-time iPhone user because they just work... They have a tiny fraction of the problems Androids tend to have, their hardware is almost always better, and their battery life is excellent. So the used Lexus would be an older model of the iPhone.

OT: If you needed french drains installed under a house, who would you hire and why?

Avoid LG, I got a flagship fancy pants phone that only lasted one day after the 1 year warranty expired. Current phone is a Motorola Moto G Plus (4th gen). I bought it after this LG turd took a dump. Has more processing power than old phone for less.

Any option seems to be expensive as heck now... We are on a combined Verizon plan, I’ve got a Galaxy 6 (acceptable) and my wife just traded in her old Iphone for a Galaxy 7 (really nice, really like it). I’ve got a buddy at work that is going for the Tracphone route because he uses it less. Either way it seems there is a significant initial investment....

That’s the unfortunate truth. I was really against apple for a long time, a hard core Andriod user. But since i switched to an IPhone, I haven’t had my phone freeze, or crash at all. And that’s worth losing some of the extra stuff the android systeme lets you do.

I do miss being able to have a gameboy emulator on my phone tho. That’s the only real draw back.

I’m not anti-apple or really a huge Android fan. I’ve been using Android for the past 3years, though, due to the ability to Torrent (don’t judge)

Anyways, I have to say, My S7e and now S8 have never frozen or required me to reboot. I’ve had apps crash but nothing that’s become a theme or whatever.

I’d say these Samsung devices have less freezing issues than my iPhones did, but they could’ve also improved over the last 3 years.

I’d say Motorola tends to be the Toyota/Lexus of the phone world...both of my Motorolas kept trucking after way more software updating than I expected them to. I gave my Moto G to a roommate after wanting to treat myself to an upgrade, and she’s used it for two years *after* I used it for two years. My Atrix (way back when in 2011) was perfect, I just assumed newer would be better and traded it in. My phone after the Atrix was a Nokia Lumia 920...actually hardware-wise the best phone I ever owned, but I am done trying to deal with Windows phones forever.

My current phone is an Asus, which may be more like the Subaru of the phone world...lots of power and fairly easy to work on (removable battery and microSD ftw), but way more issues than you thought you’d have to deal with.

Compared to the non-mini Axon 7, the Axon 7 Mini isn’t compatible with Verizon and has much lower specs.

The non-mini is supposedly pretty good. I considered one for myself during my recent OCD phone shopping but there were a few software things that I didn’t like and I wanted a better camera. But my sister has one that she got at my suggestion and she’s been happy with it.

I can attest to this. I opposed the “fruit phone” for a long time. But I got so sick of my android phones dying on me or the batteries crapping out, or the bloatware updates filling my memory until the phone was useless. I got the Iphone SE. It’s the 5 frame so accessories are dirt cheap, but it has the guts of the 6 with an even bigger battery than the 6. Still has headphone jack too. I’ve had it for over a year with zero problems. I’ve dropped it a number of times and had no issues with breaks or damage.

I had an Asus Padfone S and X and they were hot garbage. The concept was great and for the first 3 days it worked very well. But the combo of bad reception and the GPS antenna burning out, combined with abysmal battery life left me very upset.

How is Google Fi? I’ve been curious about it for a while, but I’m kind of in a GSM low reception zone.

Ouch...that sounds way worse than my experience. I bought a Zenfone 2 solely on the virtue of being the fastest phone with the most RAM I could possibly get for around $200. It works all right, but between the bloatware and some questionable design choices (don’t put the on button in the middle of the top of the phone, argh), I’m pretty done with it.

Bummer. The quote I got from the inspector that came to look at it was pretty ridiculous. I’d also rather have it drain down the back slope instead of having some stupid pump that’ll consume power and require maintenance, but the quote was for a system with a pump...

This is actually interesting. If I didn’t have 3 feature phones attached to my plan with AT&T, I’d seriously consider this (in spite of losing my iPhone, which I’m rather attached to). That sounds like the perfect service for someone like me - uses wifi when possible, cell when it must, and works internationally without jumping through hoops.

I haven’t done any international travelling with it, but the service switching means I have coverage when my single provider friends lose theirs. WE dropped our two phones down from like $130/mo with t-mobile to $50-60 a month with Fi.
