I got an email from the Infiniti dealer today and they want me to come in for an appraisal of my Q70L, as they “need” used inventory. They want to make me an offer I can’t refuse and put me in a new model. I think this is a scam to get me to trade in and buy new. I have a rule about not buying a new car before the prior one is paid off. Have you in the car sales industry seen this?

I saw this beauty at the hotel.

Went over and did my deal at John Deere, and they seemed to really like it. The last of 3 sessions did not happen, because all the farmers hit the bar at 4 pm. It is a fascinating time for immigration law, because notwithstanding all the hate (and perhaps because of it) Trump has us closer to real reform for the first time since 2001 (9/11 killed the momentum). Congress on both sides have kicked this can down the road for 30 years, and McCain, Pelosi, Feinstein, Sanders, and all the rest who have been there for decades should be ashamed of thenselves.

This is the iWireless Center in Moline, where I spoke today.

I took myself on self-guided tour of Davenport, and stopped at a small watering hole for a beer. I ended up chatting with the bartender, a lovely midwestern lass for whom Davenport was a move to the “big city,” and she can’t imagine living anywhere bigger. She said, “I got family in Des Moines, so I been there plenty of times. It is pretty nice, but I could NEVER live there.” Too much traffic in Des Moines, apparently.

I told her I was in town on business, and she wrinkled up her nose and expressed astonishment that anyone would come all the way to the Quad Cities from California to work.

I am not enjoying this rental car. It iis peppy enough, but has an annoying transmission. The steering has almost no feel, like an arcade driving game. There is no fun in driving it. Interior and exterior are remarkably unremarkable. Perfect for a rental car fleet. My next purchase will not be a Chrysler.

I am enjoying my time here in the midwest, but I must admit, it feels like being in a different country. It is very nice here, and the people are lovely. This hotel is really cool.

Yeah, that dealer thing is straight up bullshit that they love to pull. Did it have what looked like a hand written note on it (but was actually just printed on)?

Dealers always use that marketing scam. “We are desperate for quality used inventory like your car, we have buyers looking for your exact year model. We are willing to pay top dollar for your trade”

Translation:”We need to move NEW inventory soo bad, we’ve sent this letter to every person in our database to try and generate foot traffic. Oh that exceptional offer we promised on your trade..is not that exceptional. In fact it’s well below what Carmax would offer you today, several thousand dollars less than you could get selling it yourself.”

I am convinced that rental cars do manufacturers a disservice. The base spec cars are so far in character and comfort from a trim someone would buy that good models end up with reviews like yours.

Enjoy your trip to the big city.

I think it might be a bit more subtle than you think. Houston and Miami are trashed, and another major city may yet be. This means that cars that would normally be traded in will be written off or (flood or salvage title) unsaleable at a dealership. They need a used car inventory to generate traffic, and that inventory just took a hit. They might just be reading the tea leaves.

In August last year, I was driving down to Savannah to see a girl. On the way I got a call from the BMW dealer saying they had a lot of interest in cars like mine and were wondering if I was interesting it in for a newer M3. I was basically like I like mine too much to get rid of it, so you won’t be able to give me enough money for it. I mean, if someone offered me 100k for my car I would gladly hand over the title, then find myself another E90 M3.

Oh, and the girl. Yeah since I was still living in Roswell at the time and 4 hours was too far apart she decided to break things off before it got too serious. Several months later, I ended up living about 5 minutes from her. No, there is no happily ever after here.

The pre facelift, like mine was so much nicer. I had a choice between a ‘16 and the ‘12 that I got, and I picked the ‘12 because of 1) interior, 2) lower miles, 3) was black, 4) the grille.

Immigration law is really hairy nowadays. What is your take on the future of it?

Like others said, and you suspected, it’s just marketing BS to get you to buy a car. I get that same letter two or three times a year from a dealer I used for service like a decade ago. I look at that and think, “Really? You REALLY need a slightly rusty 11 year old truck? You gotta have one!?!?!” Sometimes they put the amount they’ll give me on a fake check.

With more than 380,000 people, Quad Cities is w-a-y too big for me. Nothing more than 50,000 anywhere near this quiet isolationist. Preferably much less...
