Kinja'd!!!

Well at least some locations are. I just found out today while searching for where to get a camshaft position sensor for my Neon that some Autozone locations are open 24/7! So many times have I raced across town to make it to Autozone before it closes at 10pm. Now I can just live worry free knowing that no matter what hour it is, I can go find that missing bushing or replace that faulty alternator instead of being boned until the following day. This is quite the relief for any sort of parking lot mechanic jobs!

who is likely to decide to go buying a few parts at 3am on a Saturday night?

it’d want to pay well to work the night shifts there.

Oh yeah I cant imagine its very crowded at that hour haha. It is DEFINITELY something I would use though. If only the location was closer to home but I’m sure there are a bunch of these out in LA where I am moving. It will just be quite the relief to just not worry about the store closing. I can just take my time and get shit done.

Sure I still order a lot of stuff online but sometimes even Amazon same day shipping just isnt fast enough. Although in areas with Amazon 2 hour delivery, thats even better! I love living in the future.

That’s a lot better than the Napa that is literally a quarter mile from my house:

Mon-Fri: 8:00 AM-6:00 PM

Sat: 8:00 AM-4:00 PM

Sun: 9:00 AM-3:00 PM

At least they are open on Sunday! I’ve definitely seen some local places with shorter Saturday hours and none at all on Sunday.

I have a good friend that works overnight at one in San Antonio. He goes to school in the afternoon than goes into work at night. He basically passes the work day doing school projects and homework. Most he’ll see work-wise is the random roadside repair service people or random Joe needing a battery, drive belt or cooling system stuff. More than often because that are on a highway nearby and are traveling when they encountered some sort of breakdown.

I worked in a small town Napa in high school and we were open full hours(8-6) on Saturday and 10am-5pm on Sunday. Gave me an opportunity to pick up a few hours after school on weekdays which was nice, and Sunday was normally slow enough that my boss would take the day off and let me (17 at the time) and the other part time guy run the store for the day. The Carquest store next door (two parts stores on the town square next to each other. We both did great business) was open shorter hours which gave us the advantage evenings/weekends. I think they were closed on Sundays....

It was a great job for me as a car enthusiast high school kid. Most of the customers were local shops so we knew them by name and they could just call and say “hey I need a filter for a 5.3 Silverado” and we knew who it was and we’d have it ready for them when they came in, just had to sign the invoice. A good part of the day would be looking at the old books cross referencing bearings/belts, etc from tractors and trailers and such since it was a very rural place. People like to complain about young people at parts stores relying on the computers, but at our store, I was more likely to check the book before the computer.

Wow - that’s good to know for emergencies, but I feel REALLY bad for whoever is working the night shift there.

I wonder if they sell enough from midnight - 6 am to pay for the people minding the store?

The VatoZone late at night is definitely a weird place, but I’ve made many a trip to a 24-hour one for parts to wrench on a long/late-running project.

Well at least he gets all of the fun stuff then, where people come in covered in grease, frantic, and just trying to find some hope. He gets to be a life saver!

They probably just have to sell a battery or two to pay 1 guy in there $8 an hour.

I just never knew it was a thing. I figured there wouldnt be enough business to sell parts at that hour. Profit margins ought to be nonexistent at those hours. I guess they get to be a “only shop in town” sort of thing so depending on location it could work out.

I’m so glad when the guy (or gal, although women are almost ALWAYS more knowledgeable there funny enough) at the parts counter is able to actually help with finding what I am looking for. But most of the time if I dont walk in with a part number or exact name for a part they are going to find me the wrong shit. I wish they had more parts diagrams rather than just the lists that the computer spits out.

NAPAs have the WORST hours, but the best parts. Go figure.

Yea we had one computer that was newer that did have photos and diagrams, but the other one was an old dumb terminal that connected back to a server in the office. But my boss was the owner who had owned it for 30 something years, and so he got the fancy computer. I was smart enough to know what parts depended on what options and things to help people out. Somethings I would ask 2wd/4wd, trim level, etc if I felt it would make a difference in the options. But when you have to unpack the entire truck yourself in the mornings, you learn pretty quick what parts go where and don’t even have to look things up (like oil filters, u-joints, etc). It was definitely the best job I had in high school, even if it brutal in the summers (the AC kinda worked) and the truck some days took me 2 hours to put up and still had to sweep/mop the floors, dust, etc. After I left, my brother ended up working for him for like 2 years doing the same thing.

I wish I had a cool job instead of mcdonalds in high school! At least later on I picked up a valet parking job which was kind of fun and paid better. But yeah local autoparts store would have been a good learning experience for anyone that loves car parts.

Well I had my shit job. I worked at Pizza Hut for 2 years before getting the NAPA job. I also worked at the city library, but made basically nothing for pay. Then I worked at a computer store for 3 months before going off to college. I did end up doing valet as well, but it was at an indian casino, so all the clientelle were old people in Impalas. The nicest things I drove were $70k pickup trucks.

Anything is better than the poopy diaper vans! I think my favorite car I had to drive was this deathtrap SN95 mustang (v6 auto of course) that you couldnt open the doors reliably and had trouble starting. And it felt like it was going to rattle apart. I loved it because it was terrible.

99% of cars were newish Hyundais/Hondas/Toyotas but those few “special” ones were always entertaining. It was a rock lot that we packed like sardines so people with really nice stuff usually didnt bother. The GIANT trucks were always good too.
