Cruising down the road, put my windows down for fresh air. Hear a loud BANG! from my left front. ‘What the hell just broke?’ I wondered, and started making motions to pull off to the side of the road. But nothing changed, no noises continued, the car rolled fine.

Pull into work, get on the ground and check my tire, my wheel, my brake, my strut...nothing out of the ordinary.

Did I just roll over something I didn’t see? Was there something coming the other way that made a noise I didn’t notice? Am I imagining things? I need to sleep more, or drink more coffee. Probably both.

I have noticed that the small cubes of asphalt that sometimes get pulled out of the road can make one hell of a noise. I rolled over one pulling into my spot at the autocross on Sunday and it scared the shit out of me (and the people standing next to the car I was pulling in next to). They tend to get squeezed out from under the tire and launched into the bottom of the car making quite the racket.

did you hear the loud bang while the windows were rolling down? If so it could be the window regulator singing you the song of its people.

something on the road you did not notice is my bet, but if no damage to car just ignore it and enjoy your day.

My favorite road noise event was when somebody had lost a bumper into the road, and I didn’t see it until I drove over it. Snapped the left front wheel on my Benz up hard enough to break the sway bar mount - though weirdly no damage to the tire.

Plastic drinks bottles with the lid on tight can go off pretty loudly when you catch them just right. I make a point of driving over them in car parks just for that reason.

Please don’t do that. That cap hurts like a motherfucker when it hits you.

I was driving to work yesterday and was making my lane change into the exit ramp. It’s uphill at first and as I gently pressed the accelerator I heard some noise of some kind, a quick power cut, a dull pop, and then everything was normal. I was terrified I had somehow just blown a tire but I think I was just the poor soul who ran over some plastic garbage or something and one tire lost traction or something by grabbing it.

Just a week for weird noises I guess...

Nah, it was after they were down and distinctly outside of the car.

That’s good, the song of the window regulator is one of my most hated sounds.

Is there suddenly a large hole in the bottom of the engine where a large hole shouldn’t be?

weird.

today I was driving along with my driver’s side window down and felt something ping me in the shoulder and land on my lap. it was a pebble, not sure if thrown by someone on the side of the road or flung up by a car tyre.

weird.

today I was driving along with my driver’s side window open, and something pinged me in the shoulder and landed in my lap. It was a little piece of gravel, either tossed by a bystander or flung up by a car tyre. very strange.

Not that I can tell, but it’s an american v8. It’d probably still run

This is the sort of thing that sounds like a daily occurrence for RamblinRover

Quarterly, at most. (Summary below:)

Incident in question was the fiberglass dome of a full size Shawcraft Mk III classic series Who Dalek I’d made, popping off the lazy susan bearing in the neck while in the back of KusabiSensei’s truck, which I was driving behind. Skipped on the pavement, struck oil cooler. In the mountains of western NC, approaching midnight.

Several months before the decapitation, I’d actually taken it to a convention and greeted Sylvester McCoy with it.

The trauma of that was quite perverse indeed. The noise was sub-par.

It actually is. Putting the two of us in close proximity yields some pretty crazy stuff.

Like encouraging me to restomod a 57 Bel Air.

I thought the buzzer of the oil pressure notification still worked. Or was it that you saw it go from being pegged at 3 (Because the gauge on the W124 is only marked 0-1-2-3) drifting down to 0?

Well, at least it’s not the incessant blinkenlight of the 4matic W124 with respect to the 4matic transfer box.

I assume that is still as it was?

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
09/26/2017 at 11:24, STARS: 0

Well, it’s not blinking, just on. If 4MATIC is required for a short distance, one can jumper A Thing and turn it back on until it runs long enough to fault out. But yes, steering wheel position sensor is dumb, and the clutches probably aren’t the best anymore. I think default/no clutches engaged has some torque transfer neutrally like an old scooby, so it’s not completely useless.
