In-n-Out. I don’t think you’re going to get very many people that would rather have Hardee’s.

Everybody’s saying In-n-Out, but I’ll take Carl’s Jr. They’ve got a bigger menu, and frankly, there is nothing special about In-n-Out. I’ve never understood the hype.

Double-double animal style with cheese fries.

INO, but I get the fries extra crispy animal style because INO’s fries are not that great. Although I recently was forced to have a Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s burger on the Kansas Turnpike and was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was.

Have you ever been to either? Do you live somewhere either exist?

Carl’s Jr is essentially identical to Hardee’s.

In-N-Out is amazing, but people unaccustomed to it can be confused. If you grew up with frozen hamburgers, you might not react that well to them at first (and even if you’ve had never frozen beef at other places, the freshness still isn’t there). They have obsessively made the process of making the freshest burger their goal. Every fan has a favorite order, so I’ll give you mine: #1, animal style, easy spread, fries well done, animal style, no spread.

Neither are in the Toronto area, so I’ve never tried them either.

They’re great. As fresh as they can get - you can watch them cut the potatoes.

That said, they don’t cook them well enough. I always get mine well done. I usually get them animal style with no spread as well, because cheese and carmelized onions are about the best topping ever for crispy fries.

Carl’s does make about the best national chain fast food burgers, I must admit. I don’t have one even marginally local, so I might be a bit biased, but I used to prefer them to a lot of other options when I lived in SoCal.

It’s all about that double double animal style, grilled onions and animal style fries unsalted.

In-n-Out is a uniquely Californian experience, which you will not regret. Stick with a standard cheese burger (or a double double if you’re cultivating mass like me) and make sure you ask for your fries “animal style”, which is covered in happiness. It’s not on the menu, but they know what to do.

Carl’s is good, but not very different from the messy burgers you can get in Ontario/Michigan/New York/Pennsylvania.

Whataburger > In-N-Out every single time. I’ve never understood the attachment some have to In-N-Out, I mean it’s a decent burger, sure, but the fries are crap, and the rest is nothing to write home about.

Whataburger taught me to stop putting ketchup on my hamburger. And I’m a better man for it.

I’m not and I don’t. There is absolutely nothing special about In-n-Out. Nada. Nil. Niente. It’s overpriced and their hamburgers are boring.

Their creamy pepper sauce though, that shit goes on pretty much any sandwich that gets made in my house, and it’s perfect on their patty melt.

Kinja'd!!!

There is only one.

For my first time back in SoCal after five years away I had to go overboard to make up for lost time. 3 by 3 animal style, fries light (I don’t like them crunchy) also animal style, and a neopolitan shake. Next time I won’t go so crazy, just regular fries and ice tea with my double double.

Ordering grilled onions is redundant when ordering animal style. “Animal Style” is shorthand for mustard-grilled patties, grilled onions, and extra spread.

Overpriced? They’re cheaper than McDs, radically-higher quality/fresher, etc. Have you ever looked at their menu board? In-N-Out burgers are really cheap. You’re also wrong, considering numerous famous chefs consider In-N-Out’s offerings the absolute pinnacle of the fast food burger.

09/26/2017 at 11:59, STARS: 0

I admit that I may be wrong on the price. It’s been a while since I ate there.

I have a friend who is a real wine, food, cigar aficionado. I asked him one time, “Kevin, what is a good bottle of wine?” He replied, “A good bottle of wine is one you like.” So, regardless of the opinions of famous chefs, I’m not impressed with In-n-Out. So that leaves more burgers for you!

I also grew up with them, so I’m a little biased. I always found national chain burgers pretty disgusting. Our second choice fast food burgers were from Carl’s Jr back when they were a local chain in SoCal (they didn’t expand much beyond the region until the 1990s). Another place worth checking out down there is Bob’s Big Boy, which invented the burger (the “Big Boy”) that McDs copied when they “created” the Big Mac.

I am well versed in Big Boy. We had them back in VA when I was a kid, and I ate many Big Boy burgers. I always thought they were superior to the McD’s knockoff. And oh, the hot fudge cake. They used to have the best breakfast bar going, but the restaurant, if you can still find one, is a mere shadow of its former self.

I forgot that they became a national chain. Ours were the originals, mind you. The SoCal ones still use/used the original recipe, which had similar rules and controls in place to In-N-Out.

It’s interesting to realize that the places that floated to the top in our world were the most local and carefully-controlled of the options we had.
