As I sit here looking out the window at my 6 speed GTI that mainly gets driven to work and the grocery store, I feel sort sad that I’m not driving it anywhere cool. I started to dream of neat places we could go: tail of the dragon, blue ridge mountains, autocrossimg, drag racing. Anywhere but the backlot of Safeway to buy more frozen chicken breasts.

What is your automotive driving bucket list? Where do you dream of driving when you’re stuck in auto ennui?

I live in the blue ridge mountains within 10 minutes of the blue ridge parkway and skyline drive and I pretty much never get a chance to drive them. So I should probably get out and do that soon.

Every major nuclear/atomic impact site in the continental US in the Miata. There’s irony to be had in driving a Hiroshima-built car to places in the US where we either came close to accidentally blowing ourselves up or intentionally blowing up stuff. I already visited the Mars Bluff historical marker (will try to find the actual crater in the winter) and next is the Goldsboro, NC B-52 crash site, which is about a day’s-worth round trip from where I currently live. The hardest one will be going West with it to visit the nuclear testing ranges and maybe stopping by SL-1's burial site and the nuclear jet engines on display Idaho National Laboratory.

I’d like to take a Porsche on a long cross country trip somewhere in Europe. I’ve been in a couple of rides in a 911 Turbo and Cayman S but I’d like first hand experience.

Miura on the stelvio pass with “On days like these” blasting away

Aston db5 on the furka

Alfa Romeo spider ( original of course) on the amalfi coast

Raticosa pass in an Enzo

Targa florio in an Alfa 33 stradale

California highway 1 in a 308

St tropez in a Ferrari Daytona

I can go on

Go for it! I live right outside of D.C., so it would take me about 1 hour on an early weekend morning to get to the entrance of Skyline (or 4 hours in rush hour traffic).

The M3 needs new tires soon. After I buy those I think I’m going to have to hit up some mountain roads, mainly tail of the dragon.

I got asked to be the best man at my friends wedding in Scotland. I’m not sure if I’m more excited about the wedding or right hand drive manual rental car.

We travelled across France, Italy, and Switzerland last summer in a rented Audi. It wasn’t a car centric vacation, but we still saw good stuff. A Porsche across Europe, stopping to see the sites would be awesome.

Driving across Italy was fine. Driving in Rome was insane. Rules are suggestions, there are crazy people on mopeds and motorcycles everywhere, diving in and out of traffic. We are STILL getting tickets in the mail from when we drove around Rome on some street that was only one way for part of the day had caught us on camera going the wrong direction (despite all sorts of traffic going both directions). I recommend cabs if at all possible. But the rest of Italy was pretty much cool. Cortana in central Italy is a beautiful old walled city where they filmed under the Tuscan sun. Highly recommended. You can drive your car in through the old gates, up these crazy steep medieval streets to drop off your luggage, but then you have to drive out of the city and park in a lot outside the walls. I almost drove off the top of an ancient warehouse roof, but a frantic local waved me back in the right direction. I never thought I’d get that Audi out of the city. Good times! We were going to try and make it to Maranelo, but it just didn’t happen.
