So in early August I got a clear bra put on the FoST. About a month after I noticed part of it was peeling away (the pillar between the fog light and lower front grille). They repaired it for free today but I got a call to pick it up and this happened:

Kinja'd!!!

Apparently something happened with the lift either when it was being put down or taken off, scraping part of the underside of the bumper on the passengers side and doing this to the drivers side. They are offering to repair for free but I don’t know the extent of the work they’d do yet. Apparently because of the way they are going to fix it it needs to cure for 60 days with no clear bra on it so he is going to take off small strips of the clear bra on the bottom where it needs repaired, but still ~95% of my bumper is covered.

I’m dropping it off in Wednesday but I’m not sure if it’s even worth getting repaired and driving around with no clear bra on the part of bumper that will see a lot of chips and damage. Do I just touch it up? Do I walk away? I don’t really know what to do. I was not expecting this damage to happen just from a small repair.

Definitely get it fixed. Especially if they are paying for it. I’ve never driven my car with a clear bra and I have very few rock chips in the front end. You should be just fine.

I mean, they screwed up so they should be accomodating to what you want. If their suggested repair aint gonna cut it, then they need to shell out to fix it the right way and not inconvenience you.

What do you have? FoSTs and FiSTs are notorious for soft paint

Mazdas, mainly the 3 and the 2.

take the fix, negotiate now for potential paint chip repair in 6 months before this spot gets covered up. get it all in writing.

There’s no amount of curing that’s going to make that repainted area stay on if you ever have to remove the paint protection film. I used to install that stuff, they were supposed to tell us if a car was repainted because if you need to take the film off, it’s taking that non-factory paint with it. If they’re leaving it uncovered that would be weird but fine, I guess.

This is the best idea

If you look at the picture, that faint line right above the scratch is the end of the clear bra (have to confirm this). So I’m not sure if the painted part would be covered that much. Is it worth getting insurance involved? Ive never dealt with something like this so I’m just trying to see my options.

That looks accurate, since it looks like the end of the film is kinda janky right above the scrape. I mean...that’s right at the bottom? I think I’d probably just touch it up...it sucks that getting insurance involved would maybe raise your rate and maybe show up on a Carfax, which almost makes it not worth doing the thing ‘right’. I’d rather have it touched up with a clean Carfax than done ‘right’ and have it show up on the Carfax when it comes time to sell.

What you’ve got going for you is that it’s all the way at the bottom, if you touch it up you’ll never see it unless you’re laying under it. Cut the film back just a tiny bit (to the end of any damage on the film) and touch it up, that’s my vote.

I think I may just touch it up. He now wants to have me drop it off, take off part of the clear bra, drive it himself to the body shop (yeah.....no! Not after this) and have it done in a day. He can’t give me a solid method to how his body guy is going to do it. I stopped in at my dealer and got a quote to do it right and I don’t have faith that a partial fix of the bumper will do anything. Sucks, but if I touch it up I will probably be the only one who knows it’s there.
